Ezra 7:6 - Easy To Read Version

6 Ezra came to Jerusalem from Babylon. Ezra was a teacher. {\cf2\super [45]} He knew the Law of Moses very well. The Law of Moses was given by the Lord, the God of Israel. King Artaxerxes gave Ezra everything he asked for because the Lord was with Ezra.

Then the man said, “Your name will not be Jacob. Your name will now be Israel. [191] I give you this name because you have fought with God and with men, and you have not been defeated.”


But God was watching over the Jewish leaders. The builders didn’t have to stop working until a report could be sent to King Darius. They continued working until the king sent his answer back.


They celebrated the Festival of Unleavened Bread {\cf2\super [41]} with much joy for seven days. The Lord made them very happy because he had changed the attitude of the king of Assyria. {\cf2\super [42]} So the king of Assyria had helped them do the work on God’s temple.


Now I, King Artaxerxes, give this order: I order all the men who keep the king’s money in the area west of the Euphrates River to give Ezra anything he wants. Ezra is a priest and a teacher of the Law of the God of Heaven. Do this quickly and completely.


The Lord showed his true love to me\par in front of the king, his advisers\par and the king’s important officials.\par The Lord God was with me,\par so I was brave.\par I gathered together the leaders of Israel\par to go with me to Jerusalem.\par


Bukki was the son of Abishua. Abishua was the son of Phinehas. Phinehas was the son of Eleazar. Eleazar was the son of Aaron the high priest.


Ezra \{and the group with him\} left Babylon on the first day of the first month. He arrived in Jerusalem on the first day of the fifth month. The Lord God was with Ezra.


These are the names of the family leaders and the other people that came with me (Ezra) to Jerusalem from Babylon. We came to Jerusalem during the rule of King Artaxerxes. Here is the list of names:

I was embarrassed to ask King Artaxerxes for soldiers and horsemen to protect us as we traveled. There were enemies on the road. The reason I was embarrassed to ask for protection was because of what we had told the king. We had said to King Artaxerxes, “Our God is with every person that trusts him. But God is very angry with every person that turns away from him.”


On the twelfth day of the first month {\cf2\super [57]} we left the Ahava River and started toward Jerusalem. God was with us, and he protected us from enemies and robbers along the way.


Those gatekeepers served in the days of Joiakim. Joiakim was the son of Jeshua, who was the son of Jozadak. And those gatekeepers also served in the days of Nehemiah the governor and in the days of Ezra the priest and teacher.


There were also Asaph’s brothers, who were Shemaiah, Azarel, Milalai, Gilalai, Maai, Nethanel, Judah, and Hanani. They had the musical instruments that David, man of God, had made. Ezra the teacher led the group of people that were there to dedicate the wall.


I also told those people that God had been kind to me. I told them the things the king had said to me. Then those people answered, “Let’s start to work, now!” So we began this good work.


I also need lumber for the heavy wooden beams for the gates, the walls, the walls around the temple, {\cf2\super [7]} and my house. So I need a letter from you to Asaph. Asaph is in charge of your forests.”


Then our enemies heard that we knew about their plans. They knew that God ruined their plans. So we all went back to work on the wall. Each person went back to his own place and did his part.


So all the people of Israel met together in the seventh month {\cf2\super [42]} of the year. They were together and in agreement just as if they were one man. They all met together in the open place in front of the Water Gate. All those people asked Ezra the teacher to bring out the Book of the Law of Moses. That is the Law that the Lord had given to the people of Israel.


Then on the second day of the month, {\cf2\super [45]} the leaders of all the families went to meet with Ezra, the priests, and the Levites. They all gathered around Ezra the teacher to study the words of the Law.


Ezra stood on a high wooden stage. It had been built just for this special time. On Ezra’s right side stood Mattithiah, Shema, Ananiah, Uriah, Hilkiah, and Maaseiah. And on Ezra’s left side stood Pedaiah, Mishael, Malkijah, Hashum, Hashbaddanah, Zechariah, and Meshullam.


Then Nehemiah the governor, Ezra the priest and teacher, and the men from the Levites that were teaching the people spoke. They said, “Today is a special day {\cf2\super [44]} to the Lord your God. Don’t be sad and cry.” They said that because all the people had begun to cry as they were listening to the messages of God in the Law.


Then you came down to Mount Sinai.\par You spoke to them from heaven.\par You gave them good laws.\par You gave them true teachings.\par You gave them laws and commands that were very good!\par


Then those people will know\par that you helped me.\par Then they will know\par that it was your power that\par helped me.\par


God gave his commands to Jacob (Israel).\par God gave his laws and rules to Israel.\par


Beautiful words fill my mind\par as I write these things for the king.\par Words come from my tongue like\par words coming from a skilled writer’s pen.\par


He will not leave you again.\par Let him live,\par and he will worship your name.\par


Think about God in all that you do. Then he will help you.


I came home and found no one there.\par I called and called,\par but no one answered.\par Do you think I am not able to save you?\par I have the power to save you\par from all of your troubles.\par Look, if I command the sea to dry up,\par then it will become dry!\par The fish will die without water,\par and their bodies will rot.\par


Look, the Lord’s power is enough to save you. He can hear you when you ask him for help.


“You keep saying,\par ‘We have the Lord’s teachings!\par So we are wise!’\par But that is not true.\par Why? Because the scribes {\cf2\super [69]} \par have lied with their pens.\par


Then Jesus said to the followers, “So every teacher of the law who has been taught \{the new things\} about the kingdom of heaven is like the owner of a house. He has new things and old things saved in that house. And he brings out those new things with the old things.”


“The teachers of the law and the Pharisees {\cf2\super [327]} have the authority (power) to tell you what the law of Moses says.


Teach those people to obey everything that I have told you. You can be sure that I will be with you always. I will continue with you until the end of the world.”


Where is the wise person? Where is the educated person? Where is the philosopher {\cf2\super [7]} of this time? God has made the wisdom of the world foolish.


Now, brothers and sisters, I want you to remember the Good News {\cf2\super [106]} I told you about. You received this message, and you continue strong in it.


“Now, if you will be careful to obey the Lord your God and follow all his commands that I tell you today, then the Lord your God will put you high above all the nations on earth.


“I taught you the laws and rules that the Lord my God commanded me. I taught you these laws so that you could obey them in the land you are ready to enter and take for your own.
