Don’t trust the power to take things by force.\par Don’t think you will gain anything by stealing.\par And if you become rich,\par don’t trust your riches to help you.\par


Those bad people kill widows\par and foreigners living in our country.\par They murder children that have no parents.\par


“Remember, in the past you were foreigners in the land of Egypt. So you should not cheat or hurt any person who is a foreigner in your land.


“You must never do wrong things to a foreigner. Remember, at one time you were also foreigners when you lived in the land of Egypt.


Those lawmakers are not fair to the poor people. They take away the poor people’s rights. They allow people to steal from widows and orphans. {\cf2\super [112]}


The field of grapes that belongs to the Lord All-Powerful is the nation of Israel. The grapevine—the plant the Lord loves—is the man of Judah. {\cf2\super [48]}


The prophets tell lies.\par The priests will not do\par what they were chosen to do. {\cf2\super [36]} \par And my people love it this way!\par But what will you people do\par when your punishment comes?”\par


“All the people of Israel want\par more and more money.\par All the people, from the least important\par to the most important people,\par are like that.\par All the people,\par from prophets to priests\par tell lies.\par


He might mistreat poor, helpless people. He might take advantage of people. He might not give back the collateral {\cf2\super [134]} when a person pays his debt. That evil son might pray to those filthy idols and do other terrible things.


People in Jerusalem don’t respect their parents. They hurt foreigners in that city. They cheat orphans and widows {\cf2\super [170]} in that place.


\{God\} said, “The family of Israel and Judah have done many, many very bad sins! People are being murdered everywhere in this country. And this city is filled with crime. Why? Because the people say to themselves, ‘The Lord left this country. He can’t see the things we are doing.’


“You must not do bad things to your neighbor. You must not rob {him}. You must not hold a hired worker’s salary all night until morning. [338]


“Don’t do bad things to foreigners living in your country!


They want fields,\par so they take them.\par They want houses,\par so they take them.\par They cheat a man\par and take his house.\par They cheat a man\par and take his land from him.\par


You are destroying my people! {\cf2\super [37]} \par You take their skin off them,\par and break their bones.\par You chop their bones up like \{meat\}\par to put in the pot!\par


Rich people in that city are still cruel!\par The people in that city still tell lies.\par Yes, those people tell their lies!\par


I was alone and away from home, and you did not invite me into your home. I was without clothes, and you gave me nothing to wear. I was sick and in prison, and you did not care for me.’


People worked in your fields, but you did not pay them. Those people are crying out against you. Those people harvested your crops. Now the Lord (God) of heaven’s armies {\cf2\super [24]} has heard the things they are shouting.
