Deuteronomy 29:18 - Easy To Read Version

18 Be sure that there is no man, woman, family or family group here today that turns away from the Lord our God. No person should go and serve the gods of the other nations. People who do that are like a plant that grows bitter and poisonous fruit.

Why do bad people turn against God?\par Because they think he won’t punish them.\par


They gave me poison, not food.\par They gave me vinegar, not wine.\par


So, this is what the Lord All-Powerful says\par about the prophets:\par “I will punish those prophets.\par The punishment will be\par like eating poisoned food and water.\par The prophets started a spiritual sickness.\par And that sickness spread through\par the whole country.\par So I will punish those prophets.\par That sickness came from the prophets\par in Jerusalem.”\par


Some of the people hate\par the real messages from the Lord.\par So those prophets give a different message\par to those people.\par They say,\par ‘You will have peace.’\par Some of the people are very stubborn.\par They do only the things they want to do.\par So those prophets say,\par ‘Nothing bad will happen to you!’\par


“Why are we just sitting here?\par Come, let’s run to the strong cities.\par If the Lord our God is going to make us die,\par then let’s die there.\par We have sinned against the Lord,\par so God gave us poisoned water to drink.\par


So the Lord All-Powerful,\par the God of Israel, says,\par “I will soon make the people of Judah\par eat bitter food.\par I will make them drink poisoned water.\par


They make promises—but they are only telling lies. They don’t keep their promises! They make agreements \{with other countries. God does not like those agreements\}. The judges are like poisonous weeds growing in a plowed field.


Do horses run over loose rocks? No!\par and people don’t use cows for plowing.\par But you turn everything upside down.\par You changed goodness to poison.\par You changed fairness to bitter poison.\par


I see that you are full of bitter jealousy and ruled by sin.”


“A person might hear these curses, but he might comfort himself and say, ‘I will continue doing what I want. Nothing bad will happen to me.’ That person might cause bad things to happen not only to himself but to everyone—even to the good people. [192]


Their vines and fields will be destroyed, like Sodom and Gomorrah. [216] Their grapes are like bitter poison.


Be careful that no person fails to get God’s grace (kindness). Be careful that no person becomes like a bitter weed growing among you. A person like that can ruin your whole group.


So, brothers and sisters, be careful that none of you is sinful, and refuses to believe, and stops following the living God.
