Deuteronomy 12:2 - Easy To Read Version

2 You will take that land from the nations that live there now. You must completely destroy all the places where the people of these nations worship their gods. These places are on high mountains, on hills, and under green trees.

The people built high places, stone memorials, and sacred poles. [177] They built them on every high hill and under every green tree.


The temple had not yet been finished. So people were still making animal sacrifices [12] on altars at the high places. [13]


Then all the people went to the temple of {the false god} Baal. The people destroyed the statue of Baal, and they destroyed his altars. [141] They broke them into many, many pieces. The people also killed Baal’s priest, Mattan, in front of the altars.


Ahaz made sacrifices and burned incense [188] at the high places [189] and on the hills and under every green tree.


In the past, King Solomon built some high places [292] on Destroyer Hill near Jerusalem. The high places were on the south side of that hill. King Solomon built one of those places of worship to honor Ashtoreth, that horrible thing the people of Sidon worship. King Solomon also built one to honor Chemosh, that horrible thing the people of Moab worship. And King Solomon built one high place to honor Milcom, that horrible thing the Ammonite people worship. But King Josiah defiled (ruined) all those places of worship.


The people of Israel built high places {\cf2\super [453]} \par and made God angry.\par They built statues of false gods\par and made God very jealous.\par


“Don’t worship the gods of those people. Don’t ever bow down to those gods. You must never live the way those people live. You must destroy their idols. [151] And you must break the stones that help them remember their gods. [152]


But maybe you will say, “We are trusting in the Lord our God to help us.” But I know that Hezekiah destroyed the altars {\cf2\super [337]} and high places {\cf2\super [338]} where people worshiped the Lord. And Hezekiah told the people of Judah and Jerusalem, “You must worship only at this one altar here in Jerusalem.”


Their children remember the altars\par that were dedicated to false gods.\par They remember the wooden poles\par that were dedicated to Asherah. {\cf2\super [136]} \par They remember those things\par under the green trees and on the hills.\par


“Judah, a long time ago you threw off\par your yoke.\par You broke the ropes\par \{that I used to control you\}.\par You said to me,\par ‘I will not serve you!’\par You were like a prostitute\par on every high hill\par and under every green tree. {\cf2\super [11]} \par


But you must recognize your sin.\par You turned against the Lord your God.\par That is your sin.\par You worshiped the idols of people\par from other nations.\par You worshiped those idols\par under every green tree.\par You did not obey me.’”\par This message was from the Lord.\par


“Look up to the bare hilltops, Judah.\par Is there any place where you have not\par had sex with your lovers (false gods)?\par You have sat by the road waiting for lovers,\par like an Arab waiting in the desert.\par You made the land ‘dirty’!\par How? You did many bad things\par and you were unfaithful to me.\par


The Lord spoke to me during the time King Josiah was ruling the nation of Judah. The Lord said: “Jeremiah, you saw the bad things that Israel {\cf2\super [15]} did? You saw how she was unfaithful to me. She did the sin of adultery with idols on every hill and under every green tree.


They make sacrifices on the tops of the mountains and burn incense {\cf2\super [39]} on the hills under oak trees, poplar trees, and elm trees. {\cf2\super [40]} The shade under those trees looks nice. So your daughters lie under those trees like prostitutes. And your daughters-in-law do their sexual sins.


The next morning Balak took Balaam to the town of Bamoth Baal. From there, they could see part of the Israelite camp.


“This is what you must do to those nations: You must smash their altars [41] and break their memorial stones [42] into pieces. Cut down their Asherah poles [43] and burn their statues!


But in return, you must never make any agreement with the people living in that land. You must destroy their altars. [14] I told you that. But you didn’t obey me!
