2 Kings 25:4 - Easy To Read Version

4 Nebuchadnezzar’s army finally broke through the city wall. That night King Zedekiah and all his soldiers ran away. They used the {secret} gate that went through the double walls. It was by the king’s garden. The enemy soldiers were all around the city, but Zedekiah and his men escaped on the road to the desert.

The Babylonian army chased King Zedekiah and caught him near Jericho. All of Zedekiah’s soldiers left him and ran away.


Hezekiah made Jerusalem stronger. This is how he did it: He built again all the parts of the wall that were broken down. He built towers on the wall. He also built another wall outside the first wall. He built again the strong places on the east side of the old part of Jerusalem. He made many weapons and shields.


Shallun son of Col-Hozeh fixed the Fountain Gate. Shallun was the governor of the district of Mizpah. He fixed that gate and put a roof over it. He put the doors on the hinges. Then he put the locks and bolts on the doors. Shallun also fixed the wall of the Pool of Siloam that is next to the King’s Garden. He fixed the wall all the way to the steps that go down from the City of David. {\cf2\super [10]}


All of your leaders ran away together.\par But they have all been captured—\par and without bows.\par All the leaders ran far away together.\par But they have been captured.\par


Zedekiah king of Judah will not escape from the army of the Babylonians. But he will surely be given to the king of Babylon. And Zedekiah will speak to the king of Babylon face to face. Zedekiah will see him with his own eyes.


Zedekiah, you will not escape from the king of Babylon. You will surely be caught and given to him. You will see the king of Babylon with your own eyes. He will talk to you face to face, and you will go to Babylon.


But if you refuse to surrender then Jerusalem will be given to the Babylonian army. They will burn Jerusalem down, and you will not escape from them.’”


The enemy has surrounded Jerusalem\par like men guarding a field.\par Judah, you turned against me!\par So the enemy is coming against you!”\par This message is from the Lord.\par


The people of Judah will hear the sound\par of the horse soldiers and the archers, {\cf2\super [30]} \par and the people will run away!\par Some of the people will hide in caves, {\cf2\super [31]} \par some people will hide in the bushes,\par some people will climb up into the rocks.\par All of the cities of Judah will be empty.\par No person will live in them.\par


This will be your proof that I will do what I say.’ This is what the Lord says: ‘Pharaoh Hophra is the king of Egypt. His enemies want to kill him. I will give Pharaoh Hophra to his enemies. Zedekiah was the king of Judah. Nebuchadnezzar was Zedekiah’s enemy. And I gave Zedekiah to his enemy. In the same way, I will give Pharaoh Hophra to his enemy.’”


“Go along the rows of Judah’s grapevines.\par Cut down the vines.\par (But don’t completely destroy them.)\par Cut off all their branches.\par Why? Because they don’t belong to the Lord.\par


Judah suffered very much.\par And then Judah was taken into captivity.\par Judah lives among other nations.\par But she has found no rest.\par The people that chased her caught her.\par They caught her in the narrow valleys.\par


The beauty of the Daughter of Zion {\cf2\super [4]} \par has gone away.\par Her princes became like deer.\par They were like deer\par that can’t find a meadow to feed in.\par They ran away without strength.\par They ran away from those people\par that chased them.\par


And your leader will make a hole in the wall and sneak out at night. He will cover his face \{so people won’t recognize him\}. His eyes won’t be able to see where he is going.


I will force the king’s people to live in the foreign countries around Israel. And I will scatter his army to the winds. And the enemy soldiers will chase after them.


“During the day, take your bags outside so the people can see you. Then in the evening, act like you are going away like a prisoner to a faraway country.


On the fifth day of the tenth month (January) in the twelfth year \{of exile\}, {\cf2\super [269]} a person came to me from Jerusalem. He had escaped from the battle there. He said, “The city (Jerusalem) has been taken!”


I will be against you, so your enemies will defeat you. Those enemies hate you, and they will rule over you. You will run away even when no one is chasing you.


The survivors [449] will lose their courage in the land of their enemies. They will be scared of everything. They will run around like a leaf being blown by the wind. They will run like someone is chasing them with a sword. They will fall even when no one is chasing them!


The Lord All-Powerful says, “You have special days of sadness and fasting in the fourth month, the fifth month, the seventh month, and the tenth month. {\cf2\super [22]} Those days of sadness must be changed into days of happiness. Those will be good and happy holidays. And you must love truth and peace!”


“The Lord will let your enemies defeat you. You will go to fight against your enemies one way, but you will run away from them seven different ways. The bad things that happen to you will make all the people on earth afraid.


Can one person chase away 1,000 men? Can two men cause 10,000 men to run away? That will happen only if the Lord gives them to their enemy! That will happen only if their Rock [215] (God) sells them like slaves!
