But Abishai son of Zeruiah killed the Philistine and saved David’s life.


God made my family strong and secure. [145] He made an agreement with me forever! God made sure this agreement was good and secure in every way. So surely he will give me every victory. He will give me everything I want!


Still, I will not tear away all of the kingdom from your son. I will leave him one family group to rule. I will do this for David—He was a good servant. And I will do this for Jerusalem—That is the city I chose.”


I will allow Solomon’s son to continue to rule over one family group. I will do this so that my servant David will always have a descendant to rule before me in Jerusalem, the city that I chose to be my own.


{The Lord loved David.} So for him, the Lord gave Abijah a kingdom in Jerusalem. And the Lord allowed him to have a son. The Lord also allowed Jerusalem to be safe. He did this for David.


But the Lord would not destroy Judah because of {the promise to} his servant David. The Lord had promised David that someone from his family would always be king.


Jehoram {died and} was buried with his ancestors [102] in the City of David. [103] Jehoram’s son Ahaziah became the new king.


But Jehosheba took Ahaziah’s son Joash and hid him. Jehosheba put Joash and his nurse in the inside bedroom. Jehosheba was King Jehoram’s daughter. She was also Jehoiada’s wife. Jehoiada was a priest. And Jehosheba was Ahaziah’s sister. Athaliah did not kill Joash, because Jehosheba hid him.


All the people meeting together made an agreement with the king in God’s temple. {\cf2\super [256]}


Now, Lord God of Israel, keep your promise to your servant David. This is what you promised: You said, ‘David, you will not fail to have a man from your family sit on Israel’s throne in front of me. This will happen only if your sons are careful in what they do. They must obey my law the same as you have obeyed my law.’


The Lord made a promise to David.\par The Lord promised to be loyal to David.\par The Lord promised that the kings would come from David’s family.\par


You rejected your agreement.\par You threw the king’s crown into the dirt.\par


God has given us a powerful Savior\par from the family of God’s servant, David. {\cf2\super [21]} \par


God will help the people\par that live in darkness,\par in the fear of death.\par He will lead us in the way\par that goes toward peace.”\par
