21 {Before David met Abigail,} David was saying, “I protected Nabal’s property in the desert. I made sure none of his sheep were missing. I did all that for nothing! I did good things to him, but he has been bad to me.

After they had left the city, Joseph said to his servant, “Go and follow the men. Stop them and say to them, ‘We were good to you! So why have you been bad to us? Why did you steal my master’s silver cup?


They are a group of worthless people\par with no names who were forced\par to leave their country!\par


I have done only good things.\par But those people will do bad things to me.\par \{Lord,\} give me the good things I deserve.\par


Don’t be angry! Don’t get mad!\par Don’t become so upset\par that you also want to do bad things.\par


My enemies do bad things to me,\par and I did only good things to them.\par I tried to do only good things,\par but those people turned against me.\par


Don’t do bad things to people who do good things to you. If you do, then you will have trouble for the rest of your life.


I have been good to the people of Judah.\par But now they are paying me back with evil.\par They are trying to trap me and kill me.\par


Don’t let evil defeat you. You should defeat evil by doing good.


When you become angry, don’t let that anger make you sin. And don’t continue to be angry all day.


Be sure that no person pays back wrong for wrong. But always try to do what is good for each other and for all people.


It is better to suffer for doing good than for doing wrong. Yes, it is better if that is what God wants.


Don’t do wrong to a person to pay him back for doing wrong to you. Or don’t say something bad to a person to pay him back for saying something bad to you. But \{ask God to\} bless that person. Do this, because you yourselves were called to receive a blessing.


Then David said to his men, “Put on your swords!” So David and his men put on their swords. About 400 men went with David. And 200 men stayed with the supplies.


These men were very good to us. We were out in the fields with the sheep. David’s men were with us the whole time. And they never did anything wrong to us! They did not steal anything from us the whole time!


Abigail rode her donkey and came down to the other side of the mountain. She met David and his men coming from the other direction.


I heard that you are cutting wool from your sheep. Your shepherds were with us for a while. And we did nothing wrong to them. We never took anything from your shepherds while they were at Carmel.
