Jeroboam also built temples at the high places. [158] He also chose priests from among the different family groups of Israel. (He did not choose priests only from the family group of Levi.)


Then the Lord will hit Israel. The people of Israel will be very scared—they will shake like tall grass in the water. The Lord will pull up Israel from this good land. This is the land that he gave their ancestors. He will scatter them on the other side of the Euphrates River. This will happen because the Lord is angry with the people. The people made him angry when they made special poles to worship Asherah. [175]


During that time there were men who served other gods by selling their bodies for sex. Asa forced those men to leave the country. Asa also took away the idols that his ancestors had made.


King Ben Hadad’s officers said to him, “The gods of Israel are mountain gods. We fought in a mountain area. So the people of Israel won. So let’s fight them on the flat land. Then we will win.


The temple had not yet been finished. So people were still making animal sacrifices [12] on altars at the high places. [13]


Solomon showed that he loved the Lord. He did this by obeying all the things his father David had told him to do. {But Solomon did something David did not tell him to do.} Solomon still used the high places to offer sacrifices and to burn incense. [14]


They brought out the memorial stones [130] that were in the temple of Baal and burned the temple.


Ahaz made sacrifices and burned incense [188] at the high places [189] and on the hills and under every green tree.


The people stopped following the commands of the Lord their God. They made two gold statues of calves. They made Asherah poles. [209] They worshiped all the stars of heaven and served Baal. [210]


But even the people of Judah did not obey the commands of the Lord their God. The people of Judah lived just like the people of Israel.


The king and those leaders rejected the temple {\cf2\super [278]} of the Lord God. Their ancestors {\cf2\super [279]} followed the Lord God. They worshiped the Asherah poles {\cf2\super [280]} and other idols. God was angry with the people of Judah and Jerusalem because the king and those leaders were guilty.


Ahaz offered sacrifices {\cf2\super [321]} and burned incense in the high places, {\cf2\super [322]} on the hills, and under every green tree.


So destroy their altars. [342] Break the stones they worship. Cut down their idols. [343]


All you want is to worship false gods\par under every green tree.\par You kill children by every stream,\par and sacrifice them in the rocky places.\par


Their children remember the altars\par that were dedicated to false gods.\par They remember the wooden poles\par that were dedicated to Asherah. {\cf2\super [136]} \par They remember those things\par under the green trees and on the hills.\par


“Judah, a long time ago you threw off\par your yoke.\par You broke the ropes\par \{that I used to control you\}.\par You said to me,\par ‘I will not serve you!’\par You were like a prostitute\par on every high hill\par and under every green tree. {\cf2\super [11]} \par


But you must recognize your sin.\par You turned against the Lord your God.\par That is your sin.\par You worshiped the idols of people\par from other nations.\par You worshiped those idols\par under every green tree.\par You did not obey me.’”\par This message was from the Lord.\par


Tell those mountains these things:


Bad things will happen wherever your people live. Their cities will become piles of rock. Their high places will be destroyed. Why? So that those places of worship will never be used again. Those altars will all be destroyed. People will never worship those filthy idols again. Those incense altars will be smashed. All the things you made will be completely destroyed!


Israel is like a vine that grows plenty of fruit.\par But as Israel got more and more \{things\}\par he built more and more altars\par \{to honor false gods\}.\par His land became better and better,\par so he put up better and better stones\par \{to honor false gods\}.\par


“Don’t make idols for yourselves. Don’t set up statues or memorials [440] in your land to bow down to. Why? Because I am the Lord your God!


I will destroy the Asherah poles. {\cf2\super [70]} \par And I will destroy your false gods. {\cf2\super [71]} \par


You will take that land from the nations that live there now. You must completely destroy all the places where the people of these nations worship their gods. These places are on high mountains, on hills, and under green trees.


And you must not set up special stones for worshiping false gods. The Lord your God hates those things.
