Then the Levites got Heman and his brothers, Asaph and Ethan. Heman was Joel’s son. Asaph was Berekiah’s son. Ethan was Kushaiah’s son. These men were from the Merari family group.


Asaph was the leader \{of the first group\}. Asaph’s group played the cymbals. {\cf2\super [185]} Zechariah was the \{leader of the\} second \{group\}. The other Levites were: Uzziel, Shemiramoth, Jehiel, Mattithiah, Eliab, Benaiah, Obed Edom, and Jeiel. These men played the lyres {\cf2\super [186]} and harps. {\cf2\super [187]}


David and the leaders of the army separated Asaph’s sons for special service. Asaph’s sons were Heman and Jeduthun. Their special service was to prophesy {\cf2\super [270]} God’s message by using harps, {\cf2\super [271]} lyres, {\cf2\super [272]} and cymbals. {\cf2\super [273]} Here is a list of the men that served this way:


From Jeduthun’s family: Gedaliah, Zeri, Jeshaiah, Shimei, Hashabiah, and Mattithiah. There were six of them. Jeduthun led his sons. Jeduthun used harps {\cf2\super [275]} to prophesy {\cf2\super [276]} and give thanks and praise to the Lord.


Heman led all his sons in singing in the Lord’s temple. {\cf2\super [278]} Those sons used cymbals, {\cf2\super [279]} lyres, {\cf2\super [280]} and harps. {\cf2\super [281]} That was their way of serving in God’s temple. King David chose those men.


They threw lots {\cf2\super [282]} to choose the different kinds of work each person was to do. Every person was treated the same. Young and old were treated the same. And the teacher was treated the same as the student.


Heman’s relative was Asaph. Asaph served by Heman’s right side. Asaph was Berekiah’s son. Berekiah’s was Shimea’s son.


The builders finished laying the foundation for the Lord’s temple. When the foundation was finished, the priests put on their priests’ clothing. Then they got their trumpets. And the sons of Asaph got their cymbals. They all took their places to praise the Lord. This was done the way David, king of Israel, ordered in the past.


God is truly good to Israel.\par God is good to people\par whose hearts are pure.\par


God, did you leave us forever?\par Are you still angry at your people?\par


We praise you, God!\par We praise you.\par You {\cf2\super [428]} are near and people tell about\par the amazing things you do.\par


People in Judah know God.\par People in Israel respect God’s name.\par


I lift my voice to God and cry \{for help\}.\par I lift my voice to you God, listen to me!\par


My people, listen to my teachings.\par Listen to the things I say.\par


God, some people from other nations\par came to fight your people.\par Those people ruined your holy temple.\par They left Jerusalem in ruins.\par


Shepherd of Israel, please listen to me.\par You lead Joseph’s sheep (people).\par You sit as king on the Cherub angels. {\cf2\super [459]} \par Let us see you.\par


Be happy and sing to God our strength.\par Shout with joy to the God of Israel.\par


God stands in the assembly of the gods. {\cf2\super [472]} \par He is the judge in that meeting of the gods.\par


God, don’t keep quiet!\par Don’t close your ears!\par Please say something, God.\par


At that time, a person will grab one of his brothers from his own family. That person will tell the brother, “You have a coat, {\cf2\super [30]} so you will be our leader. You will be the leader over all these ruins.”
