Don’t tell the news in Gath, [3] Don’t announce it in the streets of Ashkelon. [4] Those Philistine cities would be happy! Those foreigners [5] would be glad.


The Philistines put Saul’s armor in the temple of their false gods. They hung Saul’s head in the temple of Dagon. {\cf2\super [107]}


Then Saul said to his armorbearer, {\cf2\super [104]} “Pull out your sword and use it to kill me. Then those foreigners {\cf2\super [105]} will not hurt me and make fun of me when they come.”


The next day, the Philistine people came to take valuable things from the dead bodies. They found Saul’s body and the bodies of his sons on Mount Gilboa.


No, you did not become humble. Instead, you have turned against the Lord of heaven. You ordered the drinking cups from the Lord’s temple to be brought to you. Then you and your royal officials, your wives, and your women servants {\cf2\super [61]} drank wine from those cups. You gave praise to the gods of silver and gold, of bronze, iron, wood, and stone. Those are not really gods, they can’t see, or hear, or understand anything. But you did not give honor to the God who has the power over your life and everything you do.


And the men brought John’s head on a plate and gave it to the girl. Then the girl took the head to her mother, Herodias.
