And Esau dwelt in mount Seir: he is Edom.


He slew of Edom in the valley of the Saltpits ten thousand men, and took the rock by war, and called the name thereof Jectehel, unto this day.


And Amasias taking courage led forth his people, and went to the vale of saltpits, and slew of the children of Seir ten thousand.


And other ten thousand men the sons of Juda took, and brought to the steep of a certain rock, and cast them down headlong from the top. And they all were broken to pieces.


If his pride mount up even to heaven, and his head touch the clouds:


Pride goeth before destruction: and the spirit is lifted up before a fall.


Before destruction, the heart of a man is exalted: and before he be glorified, it is humbled.


Humiliation followeth the proud: and glory shall uphold the humble of spirit.


We have heard of the pride of Moab: he is exceeding proud. His pride and his arrogancy and his indignation is more than his strength.


Behold, I come to thee that dwelleth in a valley upon a rock above a plain, saith the Lord. And you say: Who shall strike us and who shall enter into our houses?


But if you should even beat all the army of the Chaldeans that fight against you, and there should be left of them some wounded men: they shall rise up, every man from his tent, and burn this city with fire.


Leave the cities and dwell in the rock, you that dwell in Moab: and be ye like the dove that maketh her nest in the mouth of the hole in the highest place.


Thy arrogancy hath deceived thee, and the pride of thy heart, O thou that dwellest in the clefts of the rocks and endeavourest to lay hold on the height of the hill: but though thou shouldst make thy nest as high as an eagle, I will bring thee down from thence, saith the Lord.


Why gloriest thou in the valleys? Thy valley hath flowed away, O delicate daughter, that hast trusted in thy treasures, and hast said: Who shall come to me?


By the multitude of thy merchandise, thy inner parts were filled with iniquity, and thou hast sinned: and I cast thee out from the mountain of God, and destroyed thee, O covering cherub, out of the midst of the stones of fire.


But if Edom shall say: We are destroyed, but we will return and build up what hath been destroyed: thus saith the Lord of hosts: They shall build up, and I will throw down: and they shall be called the borders of wickedness, and the people with whom the Lord is angry for ever.
