And he was very rich in possession of gold and silver.


But Lot also, who was with Abram, had flocks of sheep, and herds of beasts, and tents.


And she conceived and bore a son, and called his name Ruben, saying: The Lord saw my affliction, now my husband will love me.


We are come to sojourn in thy land, because there is no grass for the flocks of thy servants, the famine being very grievous in the land of Chanaan: and we pray thee to give orders that we thy servants may be in the land of Gessen.


And when they had passed the Jordan, they came to Aroer to the right side of the city, which is in the vale of Gad.


And by Jazer they passed into Galaad, and to the lower land of Hodsi: and they came into the woodlands of Dan. And going about by Sidon,


And these whose names are written above came in the days of Ezechias king of Juda: and they beat down their tents, and slew the inhabitants that were found there, and utterly destroyed them unto this day: and they dwelt in their place, because they found there fat pastures.


And a mixed multitude without number went up also with them, sheep and herds and beasts of divers kinds, exceeding many.


For thus saith the Lord to the house of the king of Juda: Thou art to me Galaad, the head of Libanus: yet surely I will make thee a wilderness and cities not habitable.


O vineyard of Sabama, I will weep for thee with the mourning of Jazer: thy branches are gone over the sea. They are come even to the sea of Jazer: the robber hath rushed in upon thy harvest and thy vintage.


And I will bring Israel again to his habitation: and he shall feed on Carmel and Bason, and his soul shall be satisfied in mount Ephraim and Galaad.


Is there no balm in Galaad? Or is no physician there? Why then is not the wound of the daughter of my people closed?


Feed thy people with thy rod, the flock of thy inheritance, them that dwell alone in the forest, in the midst of Carmel: they shall feed in Basan and Galaad according to the days of old.


And Moses sent some to take a view of Jazer. And they took the villages of it, and conquered the inhabitants.


They came to Moses and Eleazar the priest, and the princes of the multitude, and said:


We will leave our children, and our wives and sheep and cattle, in the cities of Galaad.


Ataroth, and Dibon, and Jazer, and Nemra, Hesebon, and Eleale, and Saban, and Nebo, and Beon:


And Etroth, and Sophan, and Jazer, and Jegbaa,


And he saw his pre-eminence, that in his portion the teacher was laid up: Who was with the princes of the people: and did the justices of the Lord, and his judgment with Israel.


The border of Jaser, and all the cities of Galaad, and half the land of the children of Ammon: as far as Aroer which is over against Rabba.


And in the mean time they sent to them into the land of Galaad: Phinees the son of Eleazar the priest:


So the children of Ruben, and the children of Gad, and the half tribe of Manasses returned, and parted from the children of Israel in Silo, which is in Chanaan, to go into Galaad the land of their possession, which they had obtained according to the commandment of the Lord by the hand of Moses.


For all that is in the world, is the concupiscence of the flesh, and the concupiscence of the eyes, and the pride of life, which is not of the Father, but is of the world.


Why dwellest thou between two borders, that thou mayest hear the bleatings of the flocks? Ruben being divided against himself, there was found a strife of courageous men.
