Deliver not up to beasts the souls that confess to thee: and forget not to the end the souls of thy poor.


For it is a day of slaughter and of treading down, and of weeping to the Lord the God of hosts in the valley of vision: searching the wall, and magnificent upon the mountain.


He that is best among them, is as a brier: and he that is righteous, as the thorn of the hedge. The day of thy inspection, thy visitation cometh: now shall be their destruction.


Now when John had heard in prison the works of Christ: sending two of his disciples he said to him:


Who answered him, saying: John the Baptist; but some Elias, and others as one of the prophets.


The same day, there came some of the Pharisees, saying to him: Depart, and get thee hence, for Herod hath a mind to kill thee.


And there shall be signs in the sun, and in the moon, and in the stars; and upon the earth distress of nations, by reason of the confusion of the roaring of the sea and of the waves;


And when he understood that he was of Herod's jurisdiction, he sent him away to Herod, who was also himself at Jerusalem, in those days.


NOW in the fifteenth year of the reign of Tiberius Caesar, Pontius Pilate being governor of Judea, and Herod being tetrarch of Galilee, and Philip his brother tetrarch of Iturea, and the country of Trachonitis, and Lysanias tetrarch of Abilina;


But they answered, and said: John the Baptist; but some say Elias; and others say that one of the former prophets is risen again.
