And there was a famine in the days of David for three years successively: and David consulted the oracle of the Lord. And the Lord said: It is for Saul, and his bloody house, because he slew the Gabaonites.


Better is wisdom, than weapons of war: and he that shall offend in one, shall lose many good things.


And he said to them: Take me up, and cast me into the sea, and the sea shall be calm to you: for I know that for my sake this great tempest is upon you.


Let love be without dissimulation. Hating that which is evil, cleaving to that which is good.


Wherefore, Go out from among them, and be ye separate, saith the Lord, and touch not the unclean thing:


And have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, but rather reprove them.


And there shall nothing of that anathema stick to thy hand: that the Lord may turn from the wrath of his fury, and may have mercy on thee, and multiply thee as he swore to thy fathers:


If there be among you any man, that is defiled in a dream by night, he shall go forth out of the camp.


Neither shalt thou bring any thing of the idol into thy house, lest thou become an anathema, like it. Thou shalt detest it as dung: and shalt utterly abhor it as uncleanness and filth, because it is an anathema.


Religion clean and undefiled before God and the Father, is this: to visit the fatherless and widows in their tribulation: and to keep one's self unspotted from this world.


But the children of Israel transgressed the commandment, and took to their own use of the anathema. For Achan the son of Charmi, the son of Zabdi, the son of Zare of the tribe of Juda, took something of the anathema. And the Lord was angry against the children of Israel.


Arise, sanctify the people, and say to them: Be ye sanctified against to-morrow. For thus saith the Lord God of Israel: The anathema is in the midst of thee, O Israel: thou canst not stand before thy enemies, till he be destroyed out of thee that is defiled with this wickedness.


And whosoever he be that shall be found guilty of this fact, he shall be burnt with fire with all his substance: because he hath transgressed the covenant of the Lord, and hath done wickedness in Israel.


Where Josue said: Because thou hast troubled us, the Lord trouble thee this day. And all Israel stoned him: and all things that were his were consumed with fire.


Little children, keep yourselves from idols. Amen.


And Saul and the people spared Agag and the best of the flocks of sheep and of the herds, and the garments and the rams, and all that was beautiful, and would not destroy them: but every thing that was vile and good for nothing, that they destroyed.
