Because he hath forsaken me, and hath adored Astarthe the goddess of the Sidonians, and Chamos the god of Moab, and Moloch the god of the children of Ammon: and hath not walked in my ways, to do justice before me, and to keep my precepts, and judgments as did David his father.


And an angel of the Lord spoke to Elias the Thesbite, saying: Arise, and go up to meet the messengers of the king of Samaria, and say to them: Is there not a God in Israel, that ye go to consult Beelzebub the god of Accaron?


And you have cast out the priests of the Lord, the sons of Aaron, and the Levites: and you have made you priests, like all the nations of the earth. Whosoever cometh and consecrateth his hand with a bullock of the herd, and with seven rams, is made a priest of those who are no gods.


He sent his word, and healed them: and delivered them from their destructions.


Many say to my soul: There is no salvation for him in his God.


And they have cast their gods into the fire. For they were not gods, but the works of men's hands, of wood and stone: and they broke them in pieces.


Shall a man make gods unto himself, and there are no gods?


Therefore thus saith the Lord: Ask among the nations: Who hath heard such horrible things as the virgin of Israel hath done to excess?


Thus saith the Lord: What iniquity have your fathers found in me, that they are gone far from me and have walked after vanity and are become vain?


The priests did not say: Where is the Lord? And they that held the law knew me not, and the pastors transgressed against me, and the prophets prophesied in Baal and followed idols.


How can I be merciful to thee? Thy children have forsaken me and swear by them that are not gods: I fed them to the full, and they committed adultery and rioted in the harlot's house.


That the house of Israel may be caught in their own heart, with which they have departed from me through all their idols.


Therefore thus saith the Lord God: Because you have surpassed the Gentiles that are round about you and have not walked in my commandments and have not kept my judgments and have not done according to the judgments of the nations that are round about you:


For all people will walk every one in the name of his god: but we will walk in the name of the Lord our God for ever and ever.


And they changed the glory of the incorruptible God into the likeness of the image of a corruptible man, and of birds, and of fourfooted beasts, and of creeping things.


But as for the meats that are sacrificed to idols, we know that an idol is nothing in the world, and that there is no God but one.


But then indeed, not knowing God, you served them, who, by nature, are not gods.


They provoked him by strange gods: and stirred him up to anger, with their abominations.


They have provoked me with that which was no god, and have angered me with their vanities. And I will provoke them with that which is no people, and will vex them with a foolish nation.


Blessed are thou, Israel: Who is like to thee, O people, that art saved by the Lord? The shield of thy help, and the sword of thy glory. Thy enemies shall deny thee, and thou shalt tread upon their necks.


Knowing that you were not redeemed with corruptible things as gold or silver, from your vain conversation of the tradition of your fathers:


And she called the child Ichabod, saying: The glory is gone from Israel, because the ark of God was taken, and for her father-in-law, and her husband.
