That I may make thee swear by the Lord the God of heaven and earth, that thou take not a wife for my son of the daughters of the Chanaanites, among whom I dwell:


Experiencing also that his father was not well pleased with the daughters of Chanaan:


And he went forward, one day's journey into the desert. And when he was there, and sat under a juniper-tree, he requested for his soul that he might die, and said: It is enough for me. Lord, take away my soul; for I am no better than my fathers.


Who will grant me this, that thou mayest protect me in hell, and hide me till thy wrath pass, and appoint me a time when thou wilt remember me?


I have done with hope. I shall now live no longer: spare me, for my days are nothing.


And now, O Lord, I beseech thee take my life from me: for it is better for me to die than to live.


And the Lord said to Jonas: Dost thou think thou hast reason to be angry, for the ivy? And he said: I am angry with reason even unto death.


But if it seem unto thee otherwise, I beseech thee to kill me: and let me find grace in thy eyes, that I be not afflicted with so great evils.
