11 All the people who were at the city gate, including the elders, said, ‘We are witnesses. May the Lord make the woman who is entering your house like Rachel and Leah,  who together built the house of Israel. May you be powerful in Ephrathah and your name well known in Bethlehem.

Ephron was sitting among the Hethites. So in the hearing  of all the Hethites who came to the gate of his city,  Ephron the Hethite answered Abraham:


They blessed Rebekah, saying to her: Our sister, may you become thousands upon ten thousands. May your offspring possess the city gates of their   enemies.


Now Laban had two daughters: the elder was named Leah, and the younger was named Rachel.


When morning came, there was Leah! So he said to Laban, ‘What have you done to me? Wasn’t it for Rachel that I worked for you? Why have you deceived me? ’


Leah conceived, gave birth to a son, and named him Reuben,  for she said, ‘The Lord has seen my affliction;  surely my husband will love me now.’


Leah’s sons were Reuben (Jacob’s firstborn), Simeon, Levi, Judah, Issachar, and Zebulun.


Rachel’s sons were Joseph and Benjamin.


So she wrote letters  in Ahab’s name and sealed them with his seal.  She sent the letters to the elders  and nobles who lived with Naboth in his city.


Salma fathered Bethlehem, and Hareph fathered Beth-gader.


Every wise woman builds her house, but a foolish one tears it down with her own hands.


Her husband is known at the city gates, where he sits among the elders of the land.


I recorded it on a scroll,  sealed it, called in witnesses, and weighed out the silver on the scales.


Bethlehem Ephrathah, you are small among the clans of Judah; one will come from you to be ruler over Israel for me. His origin  is from antiquity, from ancient times.


And you, Bethlehem, in the land of Judah, are by no means least among the rulers of Judah: Because out of you will come a ruler who will shepherd my people Israel.’  ,


But if the man doesn’t want to marry his sister-in-law, she is to go to the elders at the city gate  and say, “My brother-in-law refuses to preserve his brother’s name in Israel. He isn’t willing to perform the duty of a brother-in-law for me.”


then his sister-in-law will go up to him in the sight of the elders, remove his sandal from his foot, and spit in his face. Then she will declare, “This is what is done to a man who will not build up his brother’s house.”


The man’s name was Elimelech, and his wife’s name was Naomi.  The names of his two sons were Mahlon and Chilion. They were Ephrathites  from Bethlehem in Judah. They entered the fields of Moab and settled there.
