Tamar put ashes on her head and tore the long-sleeved robe she was wearing. She put her hand on her head  and went away crying out.


On the twenty-fourth day of this month  the Israelites assembled; they were fasting, wearing sackcloth, and had put dust on their heads.


When they looked from a distance, they could barely recognise him. They wept aloud,  and each man tore his robe and threw dust into the air and on his head.


And Babylon, the jewel of the kingdoms, the glory of the pride of the Chaldeans, will be like Sodom and Gomorrah when God overthrew them.


The elders of Daughter Zion sit on the ground in silence. They have thrown dust on their heads and put on sackcloth. The young women of Jerusalem have bowed their heads to the ground.


Because of you, they raise their voices and cry out bitterly. They throw dust on their heads; they roll in ashes.


Then Joshua tore his clothes and fell face down to the ground before the ark of the Lord until evening,  as did the elders of Israel; they all put dust on their heads.


The ten horns you saw, and the beast, will hate the prostitute.  They will make her desolate and naked, devour her flesh, and burn her up with fire.


They will stand far off in fear of her torment,  saying, Woe, woe, the great city, Babylon, the mighty city! For in a single hour your judgement has come.


For all the nations have drunk the wine of her sexual immorality, which brings wrath. The kings of the earth have committed sexual immorality with her, and the merchants of the earth have grown wealthy from her sensuality and excess.


For this reason her plagues will come in just one day – death and grief and famine. She will be burned up with fire, because the Lord God who judges   her is mighty.


That same day, a Benjaminite man ran  from the battle and came to Shiloh. His clothes were torn,  and there was dirt on his head.
