Proverbs 23:10
17 Tagairtí Cros

You sent widows away empty-handed, and the strength of the fatherless  was   crushed.

The fatherless infant is snatched from the breast; the nursing child of the poor is seized as collateral.

No doubt you would cast lots for a fatherless child and negotiate a price to sell your friend.

‘You must not mistreat any widow or fatherless child.

The Lord tears apart the house of the proud, but he protects the widow’s territory.

Don’t move an ancient boundary marker that your ancestors set up.

This is what the Lord says: Administer justice and righteousness.  Rescue the victim of robbery from his oppressor.  Don’t exploit or brutalise the resident foreigner, the fatherless, or the widow.  Don’t shed innocent blood in this place.

Instead, if you really correct your ways and your actions, if you act justly towards one another,  ,

if you no longer oppress the resident foreigner, the fatherless, and the widow,  and no longer shed innocent blood in this place or follow other gods, bringing harm on yourselves,

Do not oppress the widow or the fatherless, the resident foreigner or the poor,  and do not plot evil in your hearts against one another.”

‘I will come to you in judgement, and I will be ready to witness against sorcerers and adulterers; against those who swear falsely; against those who oppress the hired worker, the widow, and the fatherless; and against those who deny justice to the resident foreigner.  They do not fear me,’  says the Lord of Armies.

‘Do not move your neighbour’s boundary marker,  established at the start in the inheritance you will receive in the land the Lord your God is giving you to possess.

“The one who moves his neighbour’s boundary marker is cursed.” And all the people will say, “Amen! ”

Pure and undefiled religion before God the Father is this: to look after orphans and widows  in their distress and to keep oneself unstained from the world.
