Now the whole clan has risen up against your servant and said, “Hand over the one who killed his brother so we may put him to death for the life of the brother he murdered. We will eliminate the heir! ” They would extinguish my one remaining ember by not preserving my husband’s name or posterity on earth.’


The cities you select will be your six cities of refuge.


The avenger of blood himself is to kill the murderer; when he finds him, he is to kill him.


‘Here is the law concerning a case of someone who kills a person and flees there to save his life, having killed his neighbour accidentally without previously hating him:


Otherwise, the avenger of blood in the heat of his anger  might pursue the one who committed manslaughter, overtake him because the distance is great, and strike him dead. Yet he did not deserve to die,  since he did not previously hate his neighbour.


‘Tell the Israelites: Select your cities of refuge, as I instructed you through Moses,


These are the cities appointed for all the Israelites and the foreigners residing among them,  so that anyone who kills a person unintentionally may flee there and not die at the hand of the avenger of blood until he stands before the assembly.
