16 When we cried out to the Lord, he heard our plea,  and sent an angel,  , and brought us out of Egypt. Now look, we are in Kadesh, a city on the border of your territory.

As Pharaoh approached, the Israelites looked up and there were the Egyptians coming after them! The Israelites were terrified and cried out  to the Lord for help.


Then the angel of God,  who was going in front of the Israelite forces, moved and went behind them. The pillar of cloud moved from in front of them and stood behind them.


‘I am going to send an angel  before you to protect you on the way and bring you to the place I have prepared.


I will send an angel ahead of you and will drive out the Canaanites, Amorites, Hethites, Perizzites,  Hivites, and Jebusites.


Furthermore, I have heard the groaning of the Israelites, whom the Egyptians are forcing to work as slaves, and I have remembered  my covenant.


My God sent his angel  and shut the lions’ mouths; and they haven’t harmed me, for I was found innocent before him. And also before you, Your Majesty, I have not done harm.’


Our ancestors went down to Egypt, and we lived in Egypt many years, but the Egyptians treated us and our ancestors badly.


‘Let us travel through your land. We won’t go into the fields or vineyards. We won’t drink any well water. We will travel the King’s Road until we have travelled through your territory.’


They travelled from Kadesh and camped at Mount Hor  on the edge of the land of Edom.


Or has a god attempted to go and take a nation as his own out of another nation, by trials, signs, wonders, and war, by a strong hand and an outstretched arm, by great terrors, as the Lord your God did for you in Egypt before your eyes?


Because he loved  your ancestors, he chose their descendants after them and brought you out of Egypt by his presence and great power,


Now the land allotted for the tribe of the descendants of Judah by their clans  was in the southernmost region, south to the Wilderness of Zin and over to the border of Edom.
