Nehemiah 13:19 - Christian Standard Bible Anglicised

19 When shadows began to fall on the city gates of Jerusalem just before the Sabbath, I gave orders that the city gates be closed and not opened until after the Sabbath.  I posted some of my men at the gates, so that no goods could enter during the Sabbath day.

Once or twice the merchants and those who sell all kinds of goods camped outside Jerusalem,


I said to them, ‘Do not open the gates of Jerusalem until the sun is hot, and let the doors be shut and securely fastened while the guards are on duty. Station the citizens of Jerusalem as guards, some at their posts and some at their homes.’


When you reap the harvest of your land, you are not to reap all the way to the edge of your field or gather the gleanings of your harvest. Leave them for the poor and the resident foreigner;  I am the Lord your God.’


It will be a Sabbath of complete rest for you, and you must practise self-denial. You are to observe your Sabbath from the evening of the ninth day of the month until the following evening.’


and so the Jews  said to the man who had been healed, ‘This is the Sabbath.  The law prohibits you from picking up your mat.’
