13 Beware, I am against you. This is the declaration of the  Lord of Armies. I will make your chariots go up in smoke, and the sword will devour your young lions. I will cut off your prey from the earth, and the sound of your messengers will never be heard again.

Then the king of Assyria sent the field marshal,  the chief of staff, and his royal spokesman, along with a massive army, from Lachish to King Hezekiah at Jerusalem.  They advanced and came to Jerusalem, and  they took their position by the aqueduct of the upper pool, by the road to the Launderer’s Field.


Then  the royal spokesman said to them, ‘Tell Hezekiah this is what the great king, the king of Assyria, says: “What are you relying on?  ,


You have mocked the Lord  through  your messengers. You have said, “With my many chariots I have gone up to the heights of the mountains, to the far recesses of Lebanon. I cut down its tallest cedars, its choice cypress trees. I came to its farthest outpost, its densest forest.


The king had heard concerning King Tirhakah of Cush, ‘Look, he has set out to fight against you.’ So he again sent messengers to Hezekiah, saying,


They spoke against the God of Jerusalem as they had spoken against the gods of the peoples of the earth, which were made by human hands.


Beware! I am against you, you who sit above the valley, you on top of the rocky plateau – this is the  Lord’s declaration – you who say, ‘Who can come down against us? Who can enter our hiding places? ’


Announce it in Egypt, and proclaim it in Migdol! Proclaim it in Memphis and in Tahpanhes! Say, ‘Take positions! Prepare yourself, for the sword devours all around you.’


Look, I am against you, you arrogant one – this is the declaration of the Lord God of Armies – for your day has come, the time when I will punish you.


Look, I am against you, devastating mountain. This is the  Lord’s declaration. You devastate the whole earth. I will stretch out my hand against you, roll you down from the cliffs, and turn you into a charred mountain.


‘ “Therefore, this is what the Lord God says: You have spoken falsely and had lying visions; that’s why you discover that I am against you. This is the declaration of the Lord God.


and say to it, “This is what the Lord says: I am against you.  I will draw my sword from its sheath and cut off from you both the righteous and the wicked.


therefore this is what the Lord God says: See, I am against you, Tyre!  I will raise up many nations against you, just as the sea raises its waves.


You are to say, “This is what the Lord God says: Look! I am against you, Sidon, and I will display my glory within you. They will know that I am the Lord when I execute judgements against her and demonstrate my holiness through her.


therefore, I am against you and your Nile. I will turn the land of Egypt into ruins, a desolate waste from Migdol to Syene, as far as the border of Cush.

therefore, this is what the Lord God says: See, I myself am against you, Jerusalem, and I will execute judgements within you in the sight of the nations.


The lion mauled whatever its cubs needed and strangled prey for its lionesses. It filled up its dens with the kill, and its lairs with mauled prey.


Woe to the city of blood, totally deceitful, full of plunder, never without prey.


All your fortresses are fig trees with figs that ripened first; when shaken, they fall – right into the mouth of the eater!


The fire will devour you there; the sword will cut you down. It will devour you like the young locust. Multiply yourselves like the young locust; multiply like the swarming locust!


I am against you. This is the declaration of the  Lord of Armies. I will lift your skirts over your face and display your nakedness to nations, your shame to kingdoms.


The Lord said to Joshua, ‘Do not be afraid of them, for at this time tomorrow I will cause all of them to be killed before Israel.  You are to hamstring their horses and burn their chariots.’


Joshua treated them as the Lord had told him; he hamstrung their horses and burned their chariots.
