Now the earth was formless and empty,  darkness covered the surface of the watery depths, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the surface of the waters.


‘I will make her a swampland and a region for herons,  and I will sweep her away with the broom of destruction.’ This is the declaration of the  Lord of Armies.


Therefore I am  filled with anguish. Pain grips me, like the pain of a woman in labour. I am too perplexed to hear, too dismayed to see.


Look, the Lord is stripping the earth bare and making it desolate. He will twist its surface and scatter its inhabitants:


Ask and see whether a male can give birth. Why then do I see every man with his hands on his stomach like a woman in labour and every face turned pale?


About Damascus: Hamath and Arpad are put to shame, for they have heard a bad report and are agitated, like  the anxious sea that cannot be calmed.


Say, “Lord, you have threatened to cut off  this place so that no one will live in it #– #people or animals.  Indeed, it will remain desolate for ever.”


I am broken by the brokenness of my dear people. I mourn; horror has taken hold of me.


And when they ask you, “Why are you groaning? ” then say, “Because of the news that is coming.  Every heart will melt, and every hand will become weak. Every spirit will be discouraged, and all knees will run with urine.  , Yes, it is coming and it will happen. This is the declaration of the Lord God.” ’

Nations writhe in horror before them; all faces turn pale.


For the Lord will restore the majesty of Jacob, yes,  the majesty of Israel, though ravagers have ravaged them and ruined their vine branches.


Then all who see you will recoil from you, saying, ‘Nineveh is devastated; who will show sympathy to her? ’ Where can I find anyone to comfort you?


I have cut off nations; their corner towers  are destroyed. I have laid waste their streets, with no one to pass through. Their cities lie devastated, without a person, without an inhabitant.


When we heard this, we lost heart,  and everyone’s courage failed  because of you,  for the Lord your God is God in heaven above and on earth below.


The men of Ai struck down about thirty-six of them and chased them from outside the city gate to the quarries,  striking them down on the descent. As a result, the people lost heart.  ,
