For the Lord has poured out on you an overwhelming urge to   sleep; he has shut your eyes (the prophets) and covered your heads (the seers).


We grope along a wall like the blind; we grope like those without eyes. We stumble at noon as though it were twilight; we are like the dead among those who are healthy.


Give glory to the  Lord your God before he brings darkness, before your feet stumble on the mountains at dusk. You wait for light, but he brings darkest gloom and makes total darkness.


The mother of seven grew faint; she breathed her last breath. Her sun set while it was still day; she was ashamed and humiliated. The rest of them I will give over to the sword in the presence of their enemies.’ This is the  Lord’s declaration.


Then certain ones said, ‘Come, let’s make plans against Jeremiah,  for instruction will never be lost from the priest,  or counsel from the wise, or a word from the prophet.  Come, let’s denounce him  and pay no attention to all his words.’


My hand will be against the prophets who see false visions and speak lying divinations.  They will not be present in the council of my people or be recorded in the register of the house of Israel, and they will not enter the land of Israel. Then you will know that I am the Lord God.


Disaster after disaster will come, and there will be rumour after rumour. Then they will look for a vision from a prophet, but instruction will perish from the priests and counsel from the elders.


Look, the days are coming – this is the declaration of the Lord  God  – when I will send a famine through the land: not a famine of bread or a thirst for water, but of hearing the words of the  Lord.


‘Abandon your preaching,’  they   preach. ‘They should not preach these things; shame will not overtake us.’  ,
