So the people complained to Moses, ‘Give us water to drink.’ ‘Why are you complaining to me? ’ Moses replied to them. ‘Why are you testing  the Lord? ’


He named the place Massah  and Meribah  , because the Israelites complained, and because they tested the Lord, saying, ‘Is the Lord among us or not? ’


So now we consider the arrogant  to be fortunate.  Not only do those who commit wickedness prosper, they even test God  and escape.’


Then some of the scribes and Pharisees said to him, ‘Teacher, we want to see a sign from you.’


Some Pharisees approached him to test him. They asked, ‘Is it lawful for a man to divorce his wife on any grounds? ’


When he entered the temple,  the chief priests and the elders of the people came to him as he was teaching and said, ‘By what authority are you doing these things? Who gave you this authority? ’


Then the Pharisees went and plotted how to trap him by what he said.  ,


Perceiving their malicious intent, Jesus said, ‘Why are you testing me, hypocrites?


That same day some Sadducees,  who say there is no resurrection, came up to him and questioned him:


But knowing their hypocrisy,  he said to them, ‘Why are you testing   me? Bring me a denarius   , to look at.’


When the scribes  who were Pharisees  , saw that he was eating  with sinners  and tax collectors,  they asked his disciples, ‘Why does he eat  with tax collectors and sinners? ’


He asked them, ‘What are you arguing with them about? ’


Then  an expert in the law  stood up to test  him, saying, ‘Teacher,  what must I do to inherit eternal life? ’


And others, as a test,  were demanding of him a sign  from heaven.


Jesus told him, ‘Unless you people see signs and wonders,   you will not believe.’


‘What sign, then, are you going to do so that we may see and believe you? ’ they asked. ‘What are you going to perform?


Have any of the rulers  or Pharisees believed in him?


They asked this to trap him,  in order that they might have evidence to accuse him. Jesus stooped down and started writing on the ground with his finger.


Then Peter said to her, ‘Why did you agree to test the Spirit of the Lord? Look, the feet of those who have buried your husband are at the door, and they will carry you out.’


Let us not test Christ as some of them did  and were destroyed by snakes.


Do not test  the Lord your God as you tested him at Massah.
