Do not stare at me because I am dark, for the sun has gazed on me. My mother’s sons were angry with me; they made me take care of the vineyards. I have not taken care of my own vineyard.


For you have been a stronghold for the poor person, a stronghold for the needy  in his distress, a refuge from storms and a shade from heat. When the breath of the violent is like a storm against a wall,


As the sun was rising, God appointed a scorching east wind.  The sun beat down on Jonah’s head  so much that he almost fainted, and he wanted to die. He said, ‘It’s better for me to die than to live.’


But when the sun came up, it was scorched, and since it had no root, it withered away.


Other seed fell on rocky ground where it didn’t have much soil, and it grew up quickly,   since the soil wasn’t deep.


Other seed fell among thorns, and the thorns came up and choked it, and it didn’t produce fruit.


and that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith. I pray that you, being rooted and firmly established in love,


being rooted and built up in him  and established in the faith, just as you were taught,  and overflowing with gratitude.


and with every wicked deception among those who are perishing. They perish because they did not accept the love of the truth and so be saved.


For the sun rises and, together with the scorching wind, dries up the grass; its flower falls off, and its beautiful appearance perishes. In the same way, the rich person will wither away while pursuing his activities.


These people are dangerous reefs  at your love feasts  as they eat with you without reverence. They are shepherds who only look after themselves. They are waterless clouds carried along by winds;  trees in late autumn #– #fruitless, twice dead and uprooted.


They will no longer hunger; they will no longer thirst; the sun will no longer strike them, nor will any scorching heat.
