Then Shecaniah son of Jehiel,  an Elamite, responded to Ezra, ‘We have been unfaithful to our God by marrying foreign women from the surrounding peoples,  but there is still hope for Israel in spite of this.


So do not give your daughters to their sons in marriage or take their daughters for your sons.  Never pursue their welfare or prosperity,  so that you will be strong, eat the good things of the land, and leave it as an inheritance to your sons for ever.’


Israel was holy to the  Lord, the firstfruits of his harvest. All who ate of it found themselves guilty; disaster came on them.’ This is the  Lord’s declaration.


Yet in spite of all this, her treacherous sister Judah didn’t return to me with all her heart   #– #only in pretence.’ This is the Lord’s declaration.


Then do you come and stand before me in this house  that bears my name and say, ‘We are rescued, so we can continue doing all these detestable acts’?


and lends at interest or for profit, will he live? He will not live! Since he has committed all these detestable acts, he will certainly die. His death will be his own fault.  ,


One man within you commits a detestable act with his neighbour’s wife;  another defiles his daughter-in-law with depravity; and yet another violates his sister, his father’s daughter.


But they, like Adam,  have violated the covenant; there they have betrayed me.


You are to be holy to me because I, the Lord, am holy, and I have set you apart from the nations to be mine.


A pronouncement: The word of the Lord   to Israel through  Malachi.


for you are a holy people belonging to the Lord your God. The Lord has chosen you to be his own possession  out of all the peoples on the face of the earth.


But the cowards, faithless,  detestable, murderers, sexually immoral, sorcerers, idolaters, and all liars   #– #their share will be in the lake that burns with fire and sulphur,  which is the second death.’


The Israelites took their daughters as wives for themselves, gave their own daughters to their sons, and worshipped their gods.
