5 The Israelites asked, ‘Who of all the tribes of Israel didn’t come to the Lord with the assembly? ’ For a great oath had been taken that anyone who had not come to the Lord at Mizpah would certainly be put to death.

The one who does the  Lord’s business deceitfully  is cursed, and the one who withholds his sword from bloodshed is cursed.


The men of Israel had sworn an oath at Mizpah: ‘None of us will give his daughter to a Benjaminite in marriage.’


But we can’t give them our daughters as wives.’ For the Israelites had sworn, ‘Anyone who gives a wife to a Benjaminite is cursed.’


But the Israelites had compassion on their brothers, the Benjaminites, and said, ‘Today a tribe has been cut off from Israel.


‘Curse Meroz,’ says the angel of the  Lord, ‘Bitterly curse her inhabitants, for they did not come to help the  Lord, to help the Lord with the warriors.’


He took a team of oxen, cut them into pieces,  and sent them throughout the territory of Israel by messengers who said, ‘This is what will be done to the ox of anyone who doesn’t march behind Saul and Samuel.’  As a result, the terror of the Lord fell on the people, and they went out united.


and the men of Israel were worn out that day, for Saul had  placed the troops under an oath:  ‘The man who eats food before evening, before I have taken vengeance on my enemies is cursed.’ So none of the troops tasted any food.
