For I have chosen  him so that he will command his children and his house after him to keep the way of the Lord by doing what is right and just. This is how the Lord will fulfil to Abraham what he promised him.’


So Jacob said to his family and all who were with him, ‘Get rid of the foreign gods that are among you.  Purify yourselves and change your clothes.


Then Elijah approached all the people and said, ‘How long will you waver between two opinions?  , If the Lord is God, follow him. But if Baal, follow him.’  But the people didn’t answer him a word.


as well as the Jebusites, Amorites, Girgashites,


‘You must not follow a crowd in wrongdoing. Do not testify in a lawsuit and go along with a crowd to pervert justice.


Do not bow in worship to their gods, and do not serve them. Do not imitate their practices. Instead, demolish them  and smash their sacred pillars to pieces.


‘Do not make a treaty with the inhabitants of the land, or else when they prostitute themselves with their gods and sacrifice to their gods, they will invite you, and you will eat their sacrifices.


‘ “As for you, house of Israel, this is what the Lord God says: Go and serve your idols, each of you. But afterwards you will surely listen to me, and you will no longer defile my holy name with your gifts and idols.


But even if he does not rescue us,  we want you as king to know that we will not serve  your gods  or worship the gold statue you set up.’

Be sure there is no man, woman, clan, or tribe among you today whose heart turns away from the Lord our God to go and worship the gods of those nations. Be sure there is no root among you bearing poisonous and bitter fruit.


The people replied, ‘We will certainly not abandon the Lord to worship other gods!


I said to you: I am the Lord your God. Do not fear the gods of the Amorites whose land you live in.  But you did not obey me.” ’
