‘But you are not to be called “Rabbi,” because you have one Teacher,   and you are all brothers and sisters.


(John testified concerning him and exclaimed, ‘This was the one of whom I said, “The one coming after me  ranks ahead of me,  because he existed before me.” ’)


He came as a witness to testify about the light, so that all might believe through him.


The true light  that gives light to everyone was coming into the world.  ,


If we let him go on like this, everyone will believe in him, and the Romans  will come and take away both our place and our nation.’


Then the Pharisees said to one another, ‘You see? You’ve accomplished nothing. Look, the world has gone after him! ’


This man came to him at night and said, ‘Rabbi,  we know that you are a teacher  who has come from God,  for no one could perform these signs you do unless God were with him.’


When Jesus  learned that the Pharisees  had heard he was making  and baptising more disciples than John


(though Jesus himself was not baptising, but his disciples were),


In the meantime the disciples kept urging him, ‘Rabbi,  eat something.’


You sent messengers to John, and he testified to the truth.
