Since we have taken an oath of loyalty to the king,  and it is not right for us to witness his dishonour, we have sent to inform the king


But King Zedekiah said to Jeremiah, ‘I am worried about the Judeans who have defected to the Chaldeans. They may hand me over to the Judeans to abuse me.’


Tell us, then, what you think. Is it lawful to pay taxes to Caesar  or not? ’


Pilate replied, ‘What I have written, I have written.’
