Then he said, ‘Why? What has he done wrong? ’ But they kept shouting all the more, ‘Crucify him! ’


They answered him, ‘If this man weren’t a criminal,  we wouldn’t have handed him over to you.’


Then Pilate went back into the headquarters, summoned Jesus, and said to him, ‘Are you the king of the Jews? ’


I answered them that it is not the Roman custom to give someone up  before the accused faces the accusers and has an opportunity for a defence against the charges.


‘For, in fact, in this city both Herod and Pontius Pilate, with the Gentiles and the people of Israel, assembled together against your holy servant Jesus, whom you anointed,
