When the boys grew up, Esau became an expert hunter, an outdoorsman,  but Jacob was a quiet man who stayed at home.


For their possessions were too many for them to live together,  and because of their herds, the land where they stayed could not support them.


When he left there, he found Jehonadab son of Rechab  coming to meet him. He greeted him and then asked, ‘Is your heart one with mine? ’ ‘It is,’ Jehonadab replied. Jehu said, ‘If it is,  give me your hand.’ So he gave him his hand, and Jehu pulled him up into the chariot with him.


Then Jehu and Jehonadab son of Rechab entered the temple of Baal, and Jehu said to the servants of Baal, ‘Look carefully to see that there are no servants of the Lord here among you #– #only servants of Baal.’


When they  were few in number, very few indeed,  and resident foreigners in Canaan


and the families of scribes who lived in Jabez #– #the Tirathites, Shimeathites, and Sucathites. These are the Kenites who came from Hammath, the father of Rechab’s family.


Honour your father and your mother  so that you may have a long life in the land that the Lord your God is giving you.


But we have lived in tents and have obeyed and done everything our ancestor Jonadab commanded us.


The words of Jonadab, son of Rechab, have been carried out. He commanded his descendants not to drink wine, and they have not drunk to this day because they have obeyed their ancestor’s command. But I have spoken to you time and time again,  , and you have not obeyed me!


‘You and your sons are not to drink wine  or beer  when you enter the tent of meeting, or else you will die; this is a permanent statute  throughout your generations.


For he will be great in the sight of the Lord and will never drink wine or beer.  He will be filled with the Holy Spirit  while still in his mother’s womb.


Dear friends, I urge you as strangers and exiles  to abstain  from sinful  desires that wage war against the soul.


She must not eat anything that comes from the grapevine or drink wine or beer. And she must not eat anything unclean. Your wife must do everything I have commanded her.’


He said to me, “You will conceive and give birth to a son. Therefore, do not drink wine or beer, and do not eat anything unclean, because the boy will be a Nazirite to God from birth until the day of his death.” ’
