Throughout the time the priest Jehoiada  instructed  him, Joash did what was right in the Lord’s sight.


He did what was right in the Lord’s sight, but not like his ancestor David. He did everything his father Joash had done.


Next, the king stood by the pillar  , and made a covenant  in the Lord’s presence to follow the Lord and to keep his commands, his decrees, and his statutes with all his heart and with all his soul  in order to carry out the words of this covenant that were written in this book; all the people agreed to  the covenant.


join with their noble brothers and commit themselves with a sworn oath  , to follow the law of God given through God’s servant Moses  and to obey carefully all the commands, ordinances, and statutes of the Lord our Lord.


They seek me day after day and delight to know my ways, like a nation that does what is right and does not abandon the justice of their God. They ask me for righteous judgements; they delight in the nearness of God.’


They have placed their abhorrent things  in the house that bears my name and have defiled it.


This is the word that came to Jeremiah from the Lord after King Zedekiah made a covenant with all the people who were in Jerusalem to proclaim freedom  to them.


You are to consecrate the fiftieth year and proclaim freedom in the land for all its inhabitants. It will be your Jubilee,  when each of you is to return to his property and each of you to his clan.


This people   honours me with their lips, but their heart is far from me.
