Look, God and his priests are with us at our head. The trumpets are ready to sound the charge against you. Israelites, don’t fight against the Lord God of your ancestors, for you will not succeed.’


The Spirit of God enveloped  , Zechariah son of Jehoiada the priest. He stood above the people and said to them, ‘This is what God says, “Why are you transgressing the Lord’s commands so that you do not prosper?  Because you have abandoned the Lord, he has abandoned you.” ’


No wisdom, no understanding, and no counsel will prevail against the  Lord.


Moreover, you will be led out from here with your hands on your head since the Lord has rejected those you trust; you will not succeed even with their help.


“They will be taken to Babylon and will remain there until I attend to them again.”  This is the Lord’s declaration. “Then I will bring them up and restore them to this place.” ’


Look! Siege ramps  have come against the city to capture it, and the city, as a result of the sword, famine, and plague, has been handed over to the Chaldeans who are fighting against it. What you have spoken has happened. Look, you can see it!


Jeremiah replied, ‘The word of the Lord came to me:


The people coming to fight the Chaldeans will fill the houses with the corpses of their own men that I strike down in my wrath and fury. I have hidden my face  from this city because of all their evil.


Indeed, if you were to strike down the entire Chaldean army that is fighting with you,  and there remained among them only the badly wounded  men, each in his tent, they would get up and burn this city.” ’


When King Zedekiah of Judah and all the fighting men saw them, they fled. They left the city at night by way of the king’s garden  through the city gate between the two walls. They left along the route to the Arabah.


However, the Chaldean army pursued them and overtook Zedekiah in the plains of Jericho. They arrested him and brought him up to Nebuchadnezzar, Babylon’s king, at Riblah in the land of Hamath. The king passed sentence on him there.


Then he blinded Zedekiah and put him in bronze chains to take him to Babylon.


My transgressions have been formed into a yoke,  ,, fastened together by his hand; they have been placed on my neck, and the Lord has broken my strength. He has handed me over to those I cannot withstand.


The prince who is among  them will lift his bags to his shoulder in the dark and go out. They  will dig through the wall to bring him out through it. He will cover his face so that he cannot see the land with his eyes.


But I will spread my net over him, and he will be caught in my snare. I will bring him to Babylon, the land of the Chaldeans, yet he will not see it,  and he will die there.


However, this king revolted against him  by sending his ambassadors to Egypt so that they might give him horses and a large army.  Will he flourish? Will the one who does such things escape? Can he break a covenant and still escape?


But Moses responded, ‘Why are you going against the Lord’s command? It won’t succeed.
