15 But know for certain that if you put me to death, you will bring innocent blood  on yourselves, on this city, and on its residents, for it is certain that the Lord has sent me to speak all these things directly to you.’

Then he said, ‘What have you done? Your brother’s blood cries out to me from the ground!


But Reuben replied, ‘Didn’t I tell you not to harm the boy?  But you wouldn’t listen. Now we must account for his blood! ’


and also because of all the innocent blood he had shed. He had filled Jerusalem with innocent blood,  and the Lord was not willing to forgive.


King Joash didn’t remember the kindness that Zechariah’s father Jehoiada had extended to him, but killed his son. While he was dying, he said, ‘May the Lord see and demand  an account.’


The Lord hates six things; in fact, seven are detestable to him:


arrogant eyes,  a lying tongue, hands that shed innocent blood,


I have struck down your children in vain; they would not accept discipline. Your own sword has devoured your prophets like a ravaging lion.


Moreover, your skirts are stained with the blood of the innocent poor. You did not catch them breaking and entering. But in spite of all these things


But you have eyes and a heart for nothing except your own dishonest profit, shedding innocent blood and committing extortion and oppression.


This is what the Lord says: Administer justice and righteousness.  Rescue the victim of robbery from his oppressor.  Don’t exploit or brutalise the resident foreigner, the fatherless, or the widow.  Don’t shed innocent blood in this place.


Then Jeremiah said to all the officials and all the people, ‘The Lord sent me to prophesy all the words that you have heard against this temple and city.


This is the word that came to Jeremiah from the Lord.


if you no longer oppress the resident foreigner, the fatherless, and the widow,  and no longer shed innocent blood in this place or follow other gods, bringing harm on yourselves,


‘Do not defile the land where you live, for bloodshed defiles the land,  and there can be no atonement for the land because of the blood that is shed on it, except by the blood of the person who shed it.


Judas, his betrayer, replied, ‘Surely not I, Rabbi? ’ ‘You have said it,’ he told him.


and they conspired to arrest Jesus in a treacherous way and kill him.


He knelt down and cried out with a loud voice,  ‘Lord, do not hold this sin against them! ’ And after saying this, he fell asleep.


In this way, innocent blood will not be shed, and you will not become guilty of bloodshed in the land the Lord your God is giving you as an inheritance.


Because they poured out the blood of the saints and the prophets, you have given them blood to drink; they deserve it!
