God said to Abraham, ‘As for your wife Sarai, do not call her Sarai, for Sarah  will be her name.


Your name will no longer be Abram;  your name will be Abraham,  for I will make you the father of many nations.


‘Your name will no longer be Jacob,’  he said. ‘It will be Israel  because you have struggled with God  and with men and have prevailed.’


I was then intimate with the prophetess, and she conceived and gave birth to a son. The Lord said to me, ‘Name him Maher-shalal-hash-baz,


and go out to Ben Hinnom Valley  near the entrance of the Potsherd Gate. Proclaim there the words I speak to you.


‘ “Therefore, look, the days are coming   #– #this is the Lord’s declaration #– #when this place will no longer be called Topheth and Ben Hinnom Valley, but Slaughter Valley.


For I have heard the gossip of many people, ‘Terror is on every side! Report him; let’s report him! ’ Everyone I trusted  watches for my fall. ‘Perhaps he will be deceived so that we might prevail against him and take our vengeance on him.’


The priest Zephaniah read this letter in the hearing of the prophet Jeremiah.


Why have I seen this? They are terrified, they are retreating, their warriors are crushed, they flee headlong, they never look back, terror is on every side! This is the  Lord’s declaration.


Don’t go out to the fields; don’t walk on the road. For the enemy has a sword; terror is on every side.


‘Therefore, look, the days are coming’   #– #the Lord’s declaration #– #‘when this place will no longer be called Topheth and Ben Hinnom Valley, but Slaughter Valley.  Topheth will become a cemetery,  because there will be no other burial place.


You summon those who terrorise me  on every side, as if for an appointed festival day; on the day of the  Lord’s anger no one escaped or survived. My enemy has destroyed those I nurtured  and brought up.


My hand will be against the prophets who see false visions and speak lying divinations.  They will not be present in the council of my people or be recorded in the register of the house of Israel, and they will not enter the land of Israel. Then you will know that I am the Lord God.


He escorted them out and said, ‘Sirs, what must I do to be saved? ’
