Now look, you are relying on Egypt, that splintered reed of a staff  that will pierce the hand of anyone who grabs it and leans on it.  This is what Pharaoh king of Egypt is to all who rely on him.


How then can you drive back a single officer  among the least of my master’s servants? How can you rely on Egypt for chariots and for horsemen?


Listen, heavens, and pay attention, earth, for the Lord has spoken: ‘I have raised children  and brought them up, but they have rebelled against me.


Your rulers are rebels, friends of thieves. They all love graft and chase after bribes. They do not defend the rights of the fatherless, and the widow’s case never comes before them.


Oh sinful nation, people weighed down with iniquity, brood of evildoers, depraved children! They have abandoned  the  Lord; they have despised  the Holy One of Israel; they have turned their backs on him.


Why do you want more beatings? Why do you keep on rebelling? The whole head is hurt, and the whole heart is sick.


For you said, ‘We have made a covenant with Death, and we have an agreement with Sheol; when the overwhelming catastrophe  passes through, it will not touch us, because we have made falsehood our refuge and have hidden behind treachery.’


Indeed, the bed is too short to stretch out on, and its cover too small to wrap up in.


Woe to those who go to great lengths to hide their plans from the  Lord. They do their works in the dark, and say, ‘Who sees us? Who knows us? ’


They are a rebellious people, deceptive children, children who do not want to listen to the  Lord’s instruction.


Woe to those who go down to Egypt for help and who depend on horses! They trust in the abundance of chariots and in the large number of horsemen. They do not look  to the Holy One of Israel, and they do not seek the  Lord.


Each will be like a shelter from the wind, a refuge from the rain, like flowing streams  in a dry land and the shade of a massive rock in an arid land.


Then the Lord will create  a cloud of smoke by day  and a glowing flame of fire by night over the entire site of Mount Zion and over its assemblies. For there will be a canopy over all the glory,


Woe to those who drag iniquity with cords of deceit and pull sin along with cart ropes,


But they rebelled and grieved his Holy Spirit. So he became their enemy and fought against them.


I spread out my hands all day long to a rebellious people who walk in the path that is not good, following their own thoughts.


For this is what the Lord said to me with great power, to keep  me from going the way of this people:


Do not call everything a conspiracy that these people say is a conspiracy. Do not fear what they fear; do not be terrified.


When they say to you, ‘Enquire of the mediums and the spiritists who chirp and mutter,’  shouldn’t a people enquire of their God?  Should they enquire of the dead on behalf of the living?


This is what the Lord says: Cursed is the person who trusts in mankind. He makes human flesh his strength, and his heart turns from the  Lord.


Now what will you gain by travelling along the way to Egypt to drink the water of the Nile? What will you gain by travelling along the way to Assyria to drink the water of the Euphrates?


‘This is what the Lord, the God of Israel, says: This is what you will say to Judah’s king,  who is sending you to enquire of me: “Watch: Pharaoh’s army, which has come out to help you,  is going to return to its own land of Egypt.


They have her surrounded like those who guard a field, because she has rebelled against me. This is the  Lord’s declaration.


The Lord has spoken concerning you, remnant of Judah: “Don’t go to Egypt.” Know for certain that I have warned you today!


But these people have stubborn and rebellious hearts. They have turned aside and have gone away.


The Lord   said to me, ‘Son of man, these are the men who plot evil  and give wicked advice in this city.


He said to me, ‘Son of man, I am sending you to the Israelites, to  the rebellious pagans who have rebelled against me. The Israelites and their ancestors have transgressed against me to this day.


Now speak a parable  to the rebellious house. Tell them, “This is what the Lord God says: Put the pot  on the fire – put it on, and then pour water into it!


It will never again be an object of trust  for the house of Israel, drawing attention to their iniquity of turning to the Egyptians. Then they will know that I am the Lord God.” ’


I have made your forehead like a diamond, harder than flint. Don’t be afraid of them or discouraged by the look on their faces, though they are a rebellious house.’


A sword will whirl through his cities; it will destroy and devour the bars of his gates,  , because of their schemes.


Now they continue to sin and make themselves a cast image, idols skilfully made from their silver, all of them the work of craftsmen. People say about them, ‘Let the men who sacrifice  kiss the calves.’


Woe to them,  for they fled from me; destruction to them, for they rebelled against me! Though I want to redeem them, they speak lies against me.


So he answered me, ‘This is the word of the Lord to Zerubbabel: “Not by strength or by might, but by my Spirit,”  says the Lord of Armies.


And here you, a brood of sinners, stand in your ancestors’ place adding even more to the Lord’s burning anger against Israel.


Because of your hardened and unrepentant heart you are storing up wrath  for yourself in the day of wrath,  when God’s righteous judgement is revealed.


When someone hears the words of this oath, he may consider himself exempt,  thinking, “I will have peace even though I follow my own stubborn heart.” This will lead to the destruction of the well-watered land as well as the dry land.


You have been rebelling against the Lord ever since I have  known you.


‘Remember  and do not forget how you provoked the Lord your God in the wilderness. You have been rebelling against the Lord from the day you left the land of Egypt until you reached this place.


Evil people and impostors will become worse, deceiving  and being deceived.


Then the men of Israel took some of their provisions, but did not seek the Lord’s decision.
