Does he correct you and take you to court because of your piety?


The murderer rises at dawn to kill the poor and needy, and by night he becomes a thief.


The fatherless infant is snatched from the breast; the nursing child of the poor is seized as collateral.


God does not need to examine a person further, that one should  approach him in court.


There is a generation whose teeth are swords, whose fangs are knives, devouring the oppressed from the land and the needy from among mankind.


Woe  to those enacting crooked statutes and writing oppressive laws


to keep the poor from getting a fair trial and to deprive the needy among my people of justice, so that widows can be their spoil and they can plunder the fatherless.


but he will judge the poor righteously and execute justice for the oppressed of the land. He will strike the land with a sceptre  from his mouth, and he will kill the wicked with a command  from his lips.


Then the firstborn  of the poor will be well fed, and the impoverished will lie down in safety, but I will kill your root with hunger, and your remnant will be slain.


Feet trample it, the feet of the humble, the steps of the poor.


The humble will have joy after joy in the  Lord, and the poor people will rejoice in the Holy One of Israel.


Therefore the Holy One of Israel says: ‘Because you have rejected this message and have trusted in oppression and deceit, and have depended on them,


For the vineyard of the  Lord of Armies is the house of Israel, and the men  of Judah, the plant he delighted in. He expected justice but saw injustice; he expected righteousness but heard cries of despair.


You fast with contention and strife to strike viciously with your fist. You cannot fast as you do today, hoping to make your voice heard on high.


Many shepherds have destroyed my vineyard; they have trampled my plot of land. They have turned my desirable plot into a desolate wasteland.


Like a cage full of birds, so their houses are full of deceit. Therefore they have grown powerful and rich.


and when he oppresses the poor and needy, commits robbery, and does not return collateral, and when he looks to the idols, commits detestable acts,


I will lead you into the wilderness of the peoples  and enter into judgement with you there face to face.


Just as I entered into judgement with your ancestors in the wilderness of the land of Egypt,  so I will enter into judgement with you. This is the declaration of the Lord God.


If you make a sale to your neighbour or a purchase from him, do not cheat  one another.


You are not to cheat one another, but fear your God, for I am the Lord your God.


They trample the heads of the poor on the dust of the ground and obstruct the path of the needy. A man and his father have sexual relations with the same girl, profaning my holy name.


Listen to this message, you cows of Bashan who are on the hill of Samaria, women who oppress the poor and crush the needy, who say to their husbands, ‘Bring us something to drink.’


Woe to those who dream up wickedness and prepare evil plans  on their beds! At morning light  they accomplish it because the power is in their hands.


They covet fields  and seize them; they also take houses. They deprive a man of his home, a person of his inheritance.


You eat the flesh  of my people after you strip their skin from them and break their bones. You chop them up like flesh for the cooking pot, like meat in a cauldron.’


Are there still  the treasures of wickedness and the accursed short measure in the house of the wicked?


‘Listen   to another parable:   There was a landowner, who planted a vineyard, put a fence round it, dug a winepress in it, and built a watchtower.   He leased it to tenant farmers and went away.


Yet you have dishonoured the poor.  Don’t the rich oppress you and drag  you into court?
