For Jerusalem has stumbled and Judah has fallen because they have spoken and acted against the  Lord, defying his glorious presence.


Then certain ones said, ‘Come, let’s make plans against Jeremiah,  for instruction will never be lost from the priest,  or counsel from the wise, or a word from the prophet.  Come, let’s denounce him  and pay no attention to all his words.’


Yet in spite of all this, her treacherous sister Judah didn’t return to me with all her heart   #– #only in pretence.’ This is the Lord’s declaration.


‘For this is what the Lord of Armies, the God of Israel, says: “Just as my anger and fury were poured out on Jerusalem’s residents,  so will my fury pour out on you if you go to Egypt. You will become an example for cursing, scorn,  execration, and disgrace, and you will never see this place again.”


This is what the Lord God says: ‘You will drink your sister’s cup, which is deep and wide. You will be an object of   ridicule and scorn, for it holds so much.


When they came to the nations where they went, they profaned my holy name,  because it was said about them, “These are the people of the Lord, yet they had to leave his land in exile.”


He will speak words against the Most High  and oppress  the holy ones  of the Most High. He will intend to change religious festivals  and laws,  and the holy ones will be handed over to him for a time, times, and half a time.  ,


Israel will not return to the land of Egypt and Assyria will be his king, because they refused to repent.


My people are bent on turning from me. Though they call to him on high, he will not exalt them at all.


What am I going to do with you, Ephraim? What am I going to do with you, Judah? Your love is like the morning mist and like the early dew that vanishes.


Woe to them,  for they fled from me; destruction to them, for they rebelled against me! Though I want to redeem them, they speak lies against me.


They will not stay in the land of the  Lord. Instead, Ephraim will return to Egypt, and they will eat unclean food  in Assyria.


They will not pour out their wine offerings to the  Lord, and their sacrifices will not please him. Their food will be like the bread of mourners; all who eat it become defiled. For their bread will be for their appetites alone; it will not enter the house of the  Lord.


For even if they flee from devastation, Egypt will gather them, and Memphis will bury them. Thistles will take possession of their precious silver; thorns will invade their tents.


‘Your words against me are harsh,’  says the Lord. Yet you ask, ‘What have we spoken against you? ’


You have said, ‘It is useless to serve God. What have we gained by keeping his requirements  and walking mournfully  before the Lord of Armies?


I tell you that on the day of judgement   people will have to account   for every careless   word they speak.


And the seed on the rock are those who, when they hear, receive the word with joy. Having no root, these believe for a while and fall away in a time of testing.


So too, though the tongue is a small part of the body, it boasts great things.  Consider how a small fire sets ablaze a large forest.


(for as that righteous man lived among them day by day, his righteous soul was tormented by the lawless deeds he saw and heard  ) #– #


The beast was given a mouth to utter boasts and blasphemies.  It was allowed to exercise authority  , for forty-two months.
