From there he moved on to the hill country east of Bethel and pitched his tent, with Bethel on the west and Ai on the east. He built an altar to the Lord there, and he called on the name of the Lord.


for I will give you and your offspring  for ever all the land that you see.


Get up and walk around the land, through its length and width, for I will give it to you.’


So Abram moved his tent and went to live near the oaks of Mamre at Hebron,  where he built an altar to the Lord.

On that day the Lord made a covenant with Abram, saying, ‘I give this land to your offspring,  from the Brook of Egypt  to the great river, the River Euphrates:


When Abram was ninety-nine years old, the Lord appeared to him, saying, ‘I am God Almighty.  Live  in my presence and be blameless.


Then Abram fell face down and God spoke with him:


And to you and your future offspring  , I will give the land where you are residing #– #all the land of Canaan #– #as a permanent possession,  and I will be their God.’


The Lord appeared to Abraham at the oaks of Mamre  while he was sitting at the entrance of his tent during the heat of the day.


When they arrived at the place that God had told him about, Abraham built the altar there and arranged the wood. He bound his son Isaac  and placed him on the altar  on top of the wood.


The Lord, the God of heaven,  who took me from my father’s house and from my native land,  who spoke to me and swore to me, “I will give this land to your offspring”  ,  #– #he will send his angel before you,  and you can take a wife for my son from there.


So he built an altar there,  called on the name of the Lord, and pitched his tent there. Isaac’s servants also dug a well there.


stay in this land as a foreigner, and I will be with you and bless you.  For I will give all these lands to you and your offspring,  and I will confirm the oath that I swore to your father Abraham.


The Lord was standing there beside him,  saying, ‘I am the Lord,  the God of your father Abraham and the God of Isaac. I will give you and your offspring the land on which you are lying.


May God give you and your offspring the blessing of Abraham  so that you may possess the land where you live as a foreigner, the land God gave to Abraham.’


Jacob then named the place Peniel,  ‘For I have seen God face to face,’ he said, ‘yet my life has been spared.’


And he set up an altar there and called it God, the God of Israel.


I will give to you the land that I gave to Abraham and Isaac.  And I will give the land to your future descendants.’


Jacob built an altar there and called the place El-bethel  because it was there that God had revealed himself to him when he was fleeing from his brother.


Joseph said to his brothers, ‘I am about to die,  but God will certainly come to your aid and bring you up from this land to the land he swore to give to Abraham,  Isaac,  and Jacob.’

Are you not our God who drove out the inhabitants of this land before your people Israel  and who gave it for ever to the descendants of Abraham  your friend?


Jeshua son of Jozadak and his brothers the priests along with Zerubbabel son of Shealtiel  and his brothers began to build the altar of Israel’s God in order to offer burnt offerings on it, as it is written in the law of Moses, the man of God.


And Moses built an altar  and named it, ‘The Lord Is My Banner.’


And Moses wrote  down all the words of the Lord. He rose early the next morning and set up an altar and twelve pillars for the twelve tribes of Israel at the base of the mountain.


Remember your servants Abraham, Isaac, and Israel #– #you swore to them by yourself  and declared, “I will make your offspring as numerous as the stars of the sky and will give your offspring all this land that I have promised, and they will inherit it for ever.” ’


The Lord spoke to Moses: ‘Go up from here, you and the people you brought up from the land of Egypt, to the land I promised to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, saying: I will give it to your offspring.


I appeared to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob as God Almighty, but I was not known to them by my name ‘the Lord.’  ,


I also established my covenant with them to give them the land of Canaan, the land they lived in as foreigners.


In those days the house of Judah will join with the house of Israel,  and they will come together from the land of the north to the land I have given your ancestors to inherit.” ’


‘The land is to be divided among them as an inheritance based on the number of names.


“Because they did not remain loyal to me,  none of the men twenty years old or more who came up from Egypt will see the land I swore to give Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob   #– #


He didn’t give him an inheritance in it #– #not even a foot of ground #– #but he promised to give it to him as a possession, and to his descendants after him,  even though he was childless.


That is, it is not the children by physical descent  who are God’s children,  but the children of the promise  are considered to be the offspring.


Now the promises were spoken to Abraham and to his seed. He does not say ‘and to seeds’, as though referring to many, but referring to one, and to your seed,   , who is Christ.


Now you too, brothers and sisters, like Isaac,  are children of promise.


See, I have set the land before you. Enter and take possession of the land  the Lord swore to give to your ancestors  Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob and their future descendants.”


love the Lord your God, obey him, and remain faithful  to him. For he is your life, and he will prolong your days as you live in the land the Lord swore to give to your ancestors  Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.’


The Lord then said to him, ‘This is the land I promised Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, “I will give it to your descendants.”  I have let you see it with your own eyes, but you will not cross into it.’


‘When the Lord your God brings you into the land he swore to your ancestors Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob that he would give you #– #a land with large and beautiful cities that you did not build,


You are not going to take possession of their land because of your righteousness or your integrity. Instead, the Lord your God will drive out these nations before you because of their wickedness, in order to fulfil the promise he swore to your ancestors Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.


These all died in faith, although they had not received the things that were promised. But they saw them from a distance,  greeted them, and confessed that they were foreigners and temporary residents on the earth.


By faith Abraham, when he was called, obeyed and set out for a place that he was going to receive as an inheritance. He went out, even though he did not know where he was going.


‘Be strong and courageous,  for you will distribute the land I swore to their ancestors to give them as an inheritance.


When they came to the region of  the Jordan in the land of Canaan, the Reubenites, Gadites, and half the tribe of Manasseh built a large, impressive altar there by the Jordan.


At that time Joshua built an altar on Mount Ebal  to the Lord, the God of Israel,


So Gideon built an altar to the Lord there and called it The Lord Is Peace.  It is still in Ophrah of the Abiezrites today.


Then he would return to Ramah  because his home was there, he judged Israel there, and he built an altar to the Lord there.
