15 that a search should be made in your predecessors’ record books.  In these record books you will discover and verify that the city is a rebellious city, harmful to kings and provinces. There have been revolts in it since ancient times. That is why this city was destroyed.

Because of the Lord’s anger,  it came to the point in Jerusalem and Judah that he finally banished them from his presence.  Then Zedekiah rebelled against the king of Babylon.


Then the city was broken into,  and all the warriors fled  at night by way of the city gate between the two walls near the king’s garden,  even though the Chaldeans surrounded the city. As the king made his way along the route to the Arabah,


Let it be known to the king that the Jews who came from you have returned to us at Jerusalem. They are rebuilding that rebellious and evil city, finishing its walls, and repairing its foundations.


Since we have taken an oath of loyalty to the king,  and it is not right for us to witness his dishonour, we have sent to inform the king


We advise the king that if this city is rebuilt and its walls are finished, you will not have any possession west of the Euphrates.


When Sanballat the Horonite, Tobiah the Ammonite official,  and Geshem the Arab  heard about this, they mocked and despised us, and said, ‘What is this you’re doing? Are you rebelling against the king? ’


In it was written: It is reported among the nations #– #and Geshem  , agrees #– #that you and the Jews plan to rebel. This is the reason you are building the wall. According to these reports, you are to become their king


When the report was investigated and verified, both men were hanged on the gallows.  This event was recorded in the Historical Record in the king’s presence.
