But will God indeed live on earth? Even heaven, the highest heaven, cannot contain you, much less this temple I have built.


Hiram also said: Blessed be the Lord God of Israel, who made the heavens and the earth!  He gave King David a wise son with insight and understanding,  who will build a temple for the Lord and a royal palace for himself.


So the family heads of Judah and Benjamin, along with the priests and Levites #– #everyone whose spirit God had roused   #– #prepared to go up and rebuild the Lord’s house in Jerusalem.


They gave money to the stonecutters and craftsmen, and gave food, drink, and oil to the people of Sidon and Tyre, so they would bring cedar wood from Lebanon to Joppa by sea,  according to the authorisation given them by King Cyrus of Persia.


But Zerubbabel, Jeshua, and the other heads of Israel’s families answered them, ‘You may have no part with us in building a house for our God,  since we alone will build it for the Lord, the God of Israel, as King Cyrus, the king of Persia has commanded us.’


Cyrus told him, ‘Take these articles, put them in the temple in Jerusalem, and let the house of God be rebuilt on its original site.’


so that they can offer sacrifices of pleasing aroma to the God of the heavens and pray for the life of the king and his sons.


In the first year of King Cyrus, he issued a decree  concerning the house of God in Jerusalem: Let the house be rebuilt as a place for offering sacrifices, and let its original foundations be retained.  Its height is to be twenty-seven metres  and its width twenty-seven metres,


Artaxerxes, king of kings,  to Ezra the priest, an expert in the law of the God of the heavens: Greetings.


When I heard these words, I sat down and wept. I mourned for a number of days, fasting and praying  before the God of the heavens.


I said, Lord, the God of the heavens, the great and awe-inspiring God who keeps his gracious covenant with those who love him  and keep his commands,


A king’s heart is like channelled water in the  Lord’s hand: He directs it wherever he chooses.


Who has stirred up someone from the east? In righteousness he calls him to serve.  ,, The Lord hands nations over to him, and he subdues kings. He makes them like dust with his sword, like wind-driven stubble with his bow.


who confirms the message of his servant and fulfils the counsel of his messengers; who says to Jerusalem, ‘She will be inhabited,’ and to the cities of Judah, ‘They will be rebuilt,’ and I will restore her ruins;


who says to Cyrus,  ‘My shepherd, he will fulfil all my pleasure’ and says to Jerusalem, ‘She will be rebuilt,’ and of the temple, ‘Its foundation will be laid.’


The Lord says this to Cyrus, his anointed, whose right hand I have grasped to subdue nations before him and disarm   kings, to open doors before him, and even city gates will not be shut:


This is what the Lord says: Heaven  is my throne, and earth is my footstool. Where could you possibly build a house for me? And where would my resting place be?


You are to say this to them: ‘The gods that did not make the heavens  and the earth will perish from the earth  and from under these heavens.’


‘By my great strength and outstretched arm,  I made the earth,  and the people, and animals on the face of the earth. I give it to anyone I please.  ,


For this is what the Lord says: ‘When seventy years for Babylon are complete,  I will attend to you and will confirm my promise concerning you to restore you to this place.


Daniel remained there until the first year of King Cyrus.


He changes the times and seasons; he removes kings and establishes kings. He gives wisdom to the wise and knowledge to those who have understanding.


But there is a God in heaven who reveals mysteries, and he has let King Nebuchadnezzar know what will happen in the last days.  Your dream and the visions that came into your mind as you lay in bed  were these:


You will be driven away from people to live with the wild animals. You will feed on grass like cattle  and be drenched with dew from the sky for seven periods of time, until you acknowledge that the Most High is ruler over human kingdoms, and he gives them to anyone he wants.

Instead, you have exalted yourself against the Lord of the heavens. The vessels from his house were brought to you, and as you and your nobles, wives, and concubines drank wine from them,  you praised the gods made of silver and gold, bronze, iron, wood, and stone, which do not see or hear or understand.  But you have not glorified the God who holds your life-breath in his hand and who controls the whole course of your life.  ,


Then King Darius wrote to those of every people, nation, and language who live on the whole earth: ‘May your prosperity abound.


He answered them, ‘I’m a Hebrew.  I worship  the Lord,  the God of the heavens,  who made the sea  and the dry land.’
