Do not make an idol  for yourself, whether in the shape of anything in the heavens above or on the earth below or in the waters under the earth.


The woodworker stretches out a measuring line, he outlines it with a stylus; he shapes it with chisels and outlines it with a compass. He makes it according to a human form, like a beautiful person, to dwell in a temple.


I will first repay them double for their iniquity  and sin because they have polluted my land. They have filled my inheritance with the carcasses of their abhorrent and detestable idols.’


Indifferent to  her prostitution, she defiled the land and committed adultery with stones  and trees.


‘As for the incense you burned in Judah’s cities  and in Jerusalem’s streets #– #you, your ancestors, your kings, your officials, and the people of the land #– #did the Lord not remember them? He brought this to mind.


So I sent you all my servants the prophets time and time again,  , saying, “Don’t commit this detestable action that I hate.”


so that you will know that I am the Lord, whose statutes you have not followed and whose ordinances you have not practised. Instead, you have acted according to the ordinances of the nations around you.” ’


But she increased her promiscuity when she saw male figures carved on the wall,  images of the Chaldeans, engraved in bright red,


Seventy elders from the house of Israel were standing before them, with Jaazaniah son of Shaphan  standing among them. Each had a firepan in his hand, and a fragrant cloud of incense was rising up.


He said to me, ‘Go in and see the detestable, wicked acts they are committing here.’


and exchanged the glory of the immortal God for images resembling mortal man, birds, four-footed animals, and reptiles.


‘You must not eat any detestable thing.


so you don’t act corruptly and make an idol for yourselves in the shape of any figure: a male or female form,


any creature that crawls on the ground, or any fish in the waters under the earth.


Be careful not to forget the covenant of the Lord your God that he made with you, and make an idol for yourselves in the shape of anything he has forbidden you.


‘When you have children and grandchildren and have been in the land a long time, and if you act corruptly, make an idol in the form of anything, and do what is evil in the sight of the Lord your God, angering him,
