But the Lord struck Pharaoh and his household with severe plagues because of Abram’s wife, Sarai.


So I said to them, “Whoever has gold, take it off,” and they gave it to me. When I threw it into the fire, out came this calf! ’


Moses saw that the people were out of control, for Aaron had let them get out of control, making them a laughing-stock to their enemies.


The Levites did as Moses commanded, and about three thousand men fell dead that day among the people.


He took the gold from them, fashioned it with an engraving tool, and made it into an image of a calf. Then they said, ‘Israel, these are your gods,  who brought you up from the land of Egypt! ’


but those who died in the plague numbered twenty-four thousand.


Now this man acquired a field with his unrighteous wages. He fell headfirst, his body burst open and his intestines spilled out.


They even made a calf in those days, offered sacrifice to the idol, and were celebrating what their hands had made.
