After these things God tested Abraham  and said to him, ‘Abraham! ’ ‘Here I am,’ he answered.


But the angel of the Lord called to him from heaven and said, ‘Abraham, Abraham! ’ He replied, ‘Here I am.’


When Jacob awoke from his sleep, he said, ‘Surely the Lord is in this place, and I did not know it.’


That night God spoke to Israel in a vision:  ‘Jacob, Jacob! ’ he said. And Jacob replied, ‘Here I am.’


Moses went up the mountain to God, and the Lord called  to him from the mountain: ‘This is what you must say to the house of Jacob and explain to the Israelites:


Then the angel of the Lord appeared to him in a flame of fire within a bush.  As Moses looked, he saw that the bush was on fire but was not consumed.


Moses said to the Lord, ‘Look, you have told me, “Lead this people up,” but you have not let me know whom you will send with me. You said, “I know you by name,  and you have also found favour with me.”


‘This will take place,’ he continued, ‘so that they will believe that the Lord, the God of their ancestors, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob, has appeared to you.’


Then the Lord summoned Moses  and spoke to him from the tent of meeting:


A voice said to him, ‘Get up, Peter; kill and eat.’


About three in the afternoon  he distinctly saw in a vision an angel of God who came in and said to him, ‘Cornelius.’


Falling to the ground, he heard a voice saying to him, ‘Saul, Saul, why are you persecuting me? ’


with the choice gifts of the land and everything in it; and with the favour of him who appeared  in the burning bush. May these rest on the head of Joseph, on the brow of the prince of his brothers.


The Lord came, stood there, and called as before, ‘Samuel, Samuel! ’ Samuel responded, ‘Speak, for your servant is listening.’


Then the Lord called Samuel,  and he answered, ‘Here I am.’


Once again the Lord called, ‘Samuel! ’ Samuel got up, went to Eli, and said, ‘Here I am; you called me.’ ‘I didn’t call, my son,’ he replied. ‘Go back and lie down.’


Once again, for the third time, the Lord called Samuel. He got up, went to Eli, and said, ‘Here I am; you called me.’ Then Eli understood that the Lord was calling the boy.
