16 ‘Go and assemble the elders of Israel and say to them: The Lord, the God of your ancestors, the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, has appeared to me and said: I have paid close attention to you and to what has been done to you in Egypt.

So God made the expanse and separated the water under the expanse from the water above the expanse.  And it was so.


The Lord came to Sarah as he had said, and the Lord did for Sarah what he had promised.


The Lord was standing there beside him,  saying, ‘I am the Lord,  the God of your father Abraham and the God of Isaac. I will give you and your offspring the land on which you are lying.


Then he blessed Joseph and said: The God before whom my fathers Abraham and Isaac walked, the God who has been my shepherd  all my life to this day,


Joseph said to his brothers, ‘I am about to die,  but God will certainly come to your aid and bring you up from this land to the land he swore to give to Abraham,  Isaac,  and Jacob.’


A new king, who did not know about Joseph, came to power in Egypt.


Moses took the bones of Joseph  with him, because Joseph had made the Israelites swear a solemn oath, saying, ‘God will certainly come to your aid; then you must take my bones with you from this place.’


When the peoples hear, they will shudder; anguish will seize the inhabitants of Philistia.


The Lord answered Moses, ‘Go on ahead of the people and take some of the elders of Israel with you. Take the staff you struck the Nile with in your hand and go.


Then Jethro, Moses’s father-in-law, brought a burnt offering and sacrifices to God, and Aaron came with all the elders of Israel to eat a meal with Moses’s father-in-law in God’s presence.


God saw the Israelites, and God knew.


God did not harm  the Israelite nobles; they saw  him, and they ate and drank.


Then the angel of the Lord appeared to him in a flame of fire within a bush.  As Moses looked, he saw that the bush was on fire but was not consumed.


Then he continued, ‘I am the God of your father,  the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob.’  Moses hid his face because he was afraid to look at God.


Moses answered, ‘What if they won’t believe me and will not obey me but say, “The Lord did not appear  to you”? ’


Then Moses and Aaron went and assembled all the elders of the Israelites.


The people believed, and when they heard that the Lord had paid attention  to them and that he had seen their misery,  they knelt low and worshipped.


‘This will take place,’ he continued, ‘so that they will believe that the Lord, the God of their ancestors, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob, has appeared to you.’


Then the chief priests  and the elders of the people assembled in the courtyard of the high priest, who was named Caiaphas,


Blessed is the Lord, the God of Israel, because he has visited and provided redemption for his people.


They will crush you and your children among you to the ground,   and they will not leave one stone on another   in your midst, because you did not recognise the time when God visited you.’


They did this, sending it to the elders  by means of Barnabas and Saul.


Simeon  has reported how God first intervened to take from the Gentiles a people for his name.


Now from Miletus, he sent to Ephesus and summoned the elders of the church.


Conduct  yourselves honourably among the Gentiles,  so that when they slander you as evildoers, they will observe your good works and will glorify God on the day he visits.


I exhort the elders among you as a fellow elder and witness  to the sufferings of Christ, as well as one who shares in the glory about to be revealed:


She and her daughters-in-law set out to return from the territory of Moab, because she had heard in Moab that the Lord had paid attention to his people’s need by providing them with food.
