² So I commended the dead, who have already died, more than the living, who are still alive.

² Wherefore I praised the dead which are already dead more than the living which are yet alive.

² So I praised and thought more fortunate those who have been long dead than the living, who are still alive.

² Wherefore I praised the dead that have been long dead more than the living that are yet alive;

² So I declare that the dead, who have already died, are more fortunate than the living, who are still alive.

² And so, I praised the dead more than the living.

² And I praised the dead rather than the living:

Therefore, I hated life because the work that was done under the sun was distressing to me. For everything is futile and a pursuit of the wind.

A good name is better than fine perfume, and the day of one’s death is better than the day of one’s birth.

Do not weep for the dead; do not mourn for him. Weep bitterly for the one who has gone away, for he will never return again and see his native land.
