When there is famine in the land, when there is pestilence, when there is blight or mildew, locust or grasshopper, when their enemy besieges them in the land and its cities, when there is any plague or illness,


But if you refuse to let my people go, then tomorrow I will bring locusts  into your territory.


For a ten-acre  vineyard will yield only 22 litres of wine, and 220 litres  of seed will yield only 22 litres of grain.


They have sown wheat but harvested thorns. They have exhausted themselves but have no profit. Be put to shame by your harvests because of the  Lord’s burning anger.


What the devouring locust  has left, the swarming locust has eaten; what the swarming locust has left, the young locust  has eaten; and what the young locust has left, the destroying locust  has eaten.


I will repay you for the years that the swarming locust ate, the young locust, the destroying locust, and the devouring locust – my great army that I sent against you.


A fire devours in front of them, and behind them a flame blazes. The land in front of them is like the garden of Eden, but behind them, it is like a desert wasteland; there is no escape from them.


I struck you with blight and mildew; the locust devoured your many gardens and vineyards, your fig trees and olive trees, yet you did not return to me. This is the  Lord’s declaration.


You will sow but not reap; you will press olives but not anoint yourself with oil; and you will tread grapes but not drink the wine.


You have planted much but harvested little. You eat but never have enough to be satisfied. You drink but never have enough to be happy. You put on clothes but never have enough to get warm. The wage earner puts his wages into a bag with a hole in it.’


‘You expected much, but then it amounted to little. When you brought the harvest to your house, I ruined  it. Why? ’ This is the declaration of the Lord of Armies. ‘Because my house still lies in ruins, while each of you is busy with his own house.


‘Look, I am going to rebuke your descendants,  and I will spread animal waste  over your faces, the waste from your festival sacrifices,  and you will be taken away with it.


Buzzing insects will take possession of all your trees and your land’s produce.
